Job Description

World-renowned residential treatment center seeking an Equine Therapist.

Schedule: 4 10 hour days Tuesday - Friday or Monday - Thursday 6:30AM - 5:00PM

By taking the therapeutic experience out of the traditional office environment, Equine Therapists at Sierra Tucson help focus the residents attention on interacting with one of natures most majestic creatures. Understanding the power of working with horses to benefit recovery goals, Equine Therapists guide residents in a special therapy that teaches them how to recognize dysfunctional patterns of behavior and learn to define healthy relationships.

An Equine Therapist is primarily responsible planning, directing, and coordinating medically-approved recreation programs for patients in the facility. The essential functions of an Equine Therapist include:

  • Obtaining information from medical records, medical staff, family members, or patients to assess a patients capabilities, needs, and interests.
  • Planning, organizing, directing, and participating in treatment programs and activities to facilitate patient rehabilitation.
  • Planning and implementing expressive therapy, leisure, and social activities for patients to ensure their needs are addressed.
  • Conducting sessions to improve patient mental and physical well-being and instructing patients in activities and techniques designed to meet their specific needs.
  • Assessing patient needs through observation, medical records, tests, and discussions with healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
  • Creating treatment plans and programs that meet patient needs and interests.
  • Planning and implementing interventions to prevent patient harm.
  • Engaging patients in therapeutic activities, such as exercise, games, and community outings.
  • Helping patients learn the social skills needed to become or remain independent.

Qualifications/Preferences

  • Master's degree required in Recreational Therapy or other recreational-based field in which national certification is offered for that area of expertise.
  • Previous experience in recreation in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or currently in the process of obtaining national certification; or certified in the area of specialty; or clinical professional licensure (LCSW, LPC, etc.).
  • A valid Finger Print Card required if not clinical licensure is present.
  • First Aid, CPR, and De-escalation/Restraint certification required (with training available upon hire).
