Position Summary

The University of New Mexico-Taos Student Affairs Department is looking for a highly motivated Financial Aid Officer to join our team! The Financial Aid Officer will meet with UNM-Taos new and continuing students and evaluate, approve, and award financial aid in accordance with Federal, State, and University regulations, policies, and operating guidelines.

This position is essential in providing financial aid guidance and counseling regarding available financial aid opportunities to students and their families.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and highly organized, with the ability to independently manage projects while contributing to team goals. Strong analytical, communication, professional and computer skills are essential to success in this role.

This position is a term assignment until 06/30/2025. Continuance beyond this time is dependent on department need.

The duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Analyze and evaluate financial viability of students and families and provide guidance and counsel on available financial aid opportunities, eligibility requirements, and the application process.
  • Evaluate, approve, and award financial aid to students in accordance with all state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Conduct orientations, as well as entrance and exit interviews in accordance with university, state, federal, and other agency guidelines.
  • Oversee the Work-study/ Student Employment program.
  • Serve as a Veteran Certifying Official for the campus.
  • Coordinate Scholarship opportunities and the application process.
  • Facilitates the committee readings for scholarship selection and academic progress appeals.
  • Assist with financial literacy initiatives for the campus.
  • Manage the collection and reporting of financial aid data.
  • Trains and serves as an operational resource to other staff and or students, as appropriate.
  • May supervise lower level staff or student employees.
  • Conducts workshops/ and or presentations to students, parents and other interested parties on financial aid policies and procedures.
  • Provides academic advisement in reference to the implications for areas impacted with Financial Aid and crisis intervention referrals, arranges for tutorial support, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Experience in/with:

  • Financial aid policies, procedures and eligibility requirements
  • Banner and Federal Financial Aid systems
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • MS Office Suite
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
