Job Description

Provides Fire Safety compliance in the forms of existing building inspections, special event plan review and permitting, construction plans review and permitting. Additional inspections include follow-up, trouble call, spot, construction related, pre-event, and operational event inspections. Provide fire and evacuation drills for all group R-2 and group B ambulatory care facilities. Provides emergency response to all campuses in the form of fire investigations or hazard mitigation. Works closely with the Associate Director of Fire Safety and Prevention, Assistant Fire Marshal, and Fire Inspector - Lead on a day to day basis.


Salary Range

$51,700 - $60,000 per year. DOE

Essential Duties

Provides scheduled inspections of university owned buildings and properties to ensure fire safety and compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements. Serves as an appointed Fire Inspector by the AZ department of forestry and fire management. Provide fire safety construction plans review for new construction, tenant improvements, and deferred submittals including but not limited to fire alarm systems, automatic sprinkler systems, alternative fire extinguishing systems, etc. Provides on-site construction inspections to approve fire safety systems and finalize buildings to be occupied. Reviews special event requests and issues operational permits, fire safety guidelines as required to ensure compliance with fire and life safety regulations and code requirements. Performs required fire and evacuation drills for all dormitories and ambulatory care facilities. Responds to emergency calls related to fire and life safety providing investigations and inspections. Provides written reports and permits, while storing important information in the internal database for tracking of information and events.


Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree in Fire Administration, Public Administration, Individualized Programs with main emphasis on Fire or Public Administration or related field appropriate to the area of assignment and at least four (4) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Certification as Fire Inspector I. FEMA ¿ ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 500, ICS 600, ICS 700, ICS 800. Valid Arizona State Drivers License within 90 days of start date.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of Bachelors degree in Fire Administration, Public Administration, Individualized Programs with main emphasis on Fire or Public Administration or related field appropriate to the area of assignment.
  • Willing to be endorsed by ASU to be appointed Fire Inspector by the AZ dept of forestry and fire management with NFPA or ICC Certifications for Fire Extinguisher Technician, Fire Plans Examiner, Fire Inspector II, Fire Plans Examiner, Arson Investigator, ICS 300, ICS 400, Certified Fire Marshal.


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Position requires working in various buildings, properties and construction sites involving rough terrain, limited access using stairs or ladders to access above grade and below grade level areas to include confined spaces in order to inspect and verify fire and life safety related system compliance.
  • Understands operating principles and applications of emergency response equipment and is capable of using equipment in the field during emergencies or while covering for staff that may be absent.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds.
