FIRE & LIFE SAFETY EDUCATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Fire and Life Safety Educator is responsible for coordinating and presenting safety messages at community

activities and programs in the areas of fire prevention, fire and life safety, and community relations. The

incumbent will ensure presentation are prepared for different age groups from toddlers through elders. This

position provides presentations and educational messages that occur during workhours, afterhours, weekends, and

on holidays.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 Develop, prepare, and conduct neighborhood/community trainings on fire and life safety topics; Prepare

literature and visual aids for presentations.

 Evaluate current programs and make recommendations for improvement; Research and develop new

programs.

 Organize and coordinate department involvement in promotional events and Community sponsored activities.

 Coordinate the Juvenile Fire setter Prevention Program; Develop, implement, and evaluate fire safety

curriculums for the school system for all grade levels.

 Respond to citizen requests for information on programs; Schedule station tours and special departmental

events.

 Work closely with fire operations division in teaching various educational programs for presentation to

students, the community, and community employees.

 Maintain fire prevention library and inventory of fire prevention handouts and information; Order replacement

materials to ensure required publications and materials are available for distribution at scheduled educational

programs.

 Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

 Knowledge of principles and practices of public education, fire and life safety programs.

 Knowledge of principles, practices, and terminology of fire prevention.

 Knowledge of instructional techniques, research methods, and procedures.
