Job Description

Definition

Definition: Under supervision of the training Captain, learns to extinguish fires, perform rescue operations and maintain fire station facilities and equipment. This is the entry level class in the Firefighter series. This class is distinguished from the position class of Firefighter in this entry level position has not achieved successful completion of the Fire Training Academy.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions, may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification).

Examples of Tasks

1. Participate in Fire Academy training program and in on-the-job training activities; drill with engine company members; attend special instruction sessions in firefighting, rescue and emergency medical procedures and techniques.
  • Learn the proper procedures for responding to fire incidents, including laying lines of hose, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders and other equipment, including motorized equipment, ventilating buildings, performing rescue work and cleaning up after fires to limit water damage.
  • Learn the proper procedures and techniques for rendering first aid and emergency medical assistance.
  • Learn to clean and service firefighting apparatus and equipment, including motorized equipment; test and wash hose;and other equipment.
  • Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.
  • Meet the criteria established by the department for acceptable performance at each step or level of training in order to progress to the next level.
  • May be required to drive department vehicles to pick up supplies and equipment or to drive to and from training exercise


2. Learn to understand and act in accordance with departmental policies, rules and instructions in the field of firefighting.

3. Demonstrate mechanical aptitude as required in the operation of firefighting equipment.

4. Read, understand and retain the information in technical materials, rules, regulations and procedures related to firefighting.

5. Learn to operate all firefighting equipment, both manually operated and motorized.

6. Learn to read and interpret geographic information systems maps.

7. Learn and follow all applicable safety procedures.

8. Think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies.

9. Understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately.

10. Operate and maintain voice radio equipment.

11. Learn to work in a team environment

12. Work in adverse physical locations and conditions.

13. Maintain physical condition to perform essential duties as specified by firefighter certification.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of street names and locations in the Salt River Indian Community.


  • Ability to work in firefighter protective equipment
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time during emergency incidents
  • Ability to communicate with others.
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to exercising sound judgment and rational thinking under dangerous circumstances.
  • Ability to demonstrating intellectual capabilities during training and testing processes.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing more than 75 pounds.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education & Experience : Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Must have State of Arizona EMT certification at time of hire.
  • Applicants must pass a written assessment and must possess a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card to be considered for hire with the SRPMIC Fire Department. Failure to pass either of the components will be considered an automatic disqualifier.
  • The written assessment must be passed with a score of 70% or better.
  • Applicants are required to provide their Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card from a licensed agency at the time of the Written Examination, failure to do so will not allow you to move forward in the process.


    • Firefighter Recruits must successfully pass the Fire Academy and obtain their State of Arizona Firefighter I and II certifications before moving up the regular employee job class of Firefighter where their initial probationary year begins.


    Special Requirements

    • Employees in, and applicants applying for, jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the "Community Code of Ordinances, Chapter 11, "Minors", Article X. "Investigation of Persons Working With Children".
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.


    Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
