The City of Aurora is pleased to offer:
  • Training assistance through our online Learning Management System as well as a Tuition Assistance Program
  • One time 2.5% pay increase for obtaining CDL B or A license for individuals whose job requirement is to maintain a CDL
  • An annual bonus up to $500 (paid in December if eligibility criteria is met) for individuals whose job requirement is to maintain a CDL
  • Boot (steel toe or other safety toe boots are required) allowance in the amount of $150.00 after successful completion of your introductory period and then yearly on your anniversary date
  • The Forestry Division will provide a $250 yearly clothing alowance (first year is $500)
  • The Forestry Division will provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Climbing gear
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The City of Aurora is seeking a skilled Forestry Supervisor to supervise, monitor, and coordinate the activities of multiple crews of skilled and semi-skilled tree workers. The supervisor may be engaged in production tree work, evaluating urban forest conditions; scheduling and coordinating tree maintenance, supervising volunteer planting and pruning events, and coordinating equipment repair activities to ensure a consistently safe work environment

  • Plans, assigns, monitors, and coordinates the work activities of assigned crews.
  • Directly assists production crews in trimming and removal operations, traffic control, stump grinding, and tree planting to meet department goals.
  • Resolves problems and conflicts arising during the course of the work.
  • Reports and investigates accidents, tracks near misses, and implements safety improvements.
  • Assists in preparing and recommending equipment specifications
  • Manages productivity records updating. Prepares productivity and activity reports.
  • Maintains and enforces safety regulations and procedures
  • Coordinates preventative maintenance programs for city trees, shop equipment, and forestry fleet.
  • Inspects contractor and in-house staff work for conformance to standard
  • Makes recommendations regarding budgetary matters as well as tracks and monitors budget[s]
  • Schedules, coordinates, and tracks training and certifications for FTE's and apprentices.
  • Participates in selecting, hiring, training, evaluating, supervising, and disciplining assigned employees
  • Supports, coordinates, and trains volunteers and volunteer events
  • Performs additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree Preferred
  • Required to be an ISA Certified Arborist in good standing

Experience:
  • At least 4 years' progressively responsible experience in tree trimming and removal operations
  • Must have tree climbing skill with rope and saddle
  • 1 year of supervisory or lead work experience.
An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of methods and processes to nurture and maintain trees. Knowledge of hazards and safety practices common to tree maintenance programs.

Abilities:
  • Ability to multi-task while working effectively with employees and citizens; communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Prioritize, coordinate, and make work assignment
  • Fulfill department goals and objectives; and direct, effectively train, and supervise other employees.
  • Ability to prune, remove, and plant trees using industry standard equipment and methods.

Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills.
  • Skill in operation of equipment and tools of assigned function.
Licenses, Certificates, and/or Equipment Required:
  • Valid Drivers license with a good driving record
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers License within 6 months of employment
  • CPR and First Aid certifications within 6 months of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate to heavy physical work requiring ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance or 100 pounds with assistance
  • Regular walking and standing. Some pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, crouching, and climbing; hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles.
  • Vision to read reports, manuals, written materials, instruments and gauges
  • Good speech communication, hearing, and listening for effective communication with others
  • Supervises and trains employees and communicates with citizens.

Work Environment:
  • Works both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and fumes.
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel
Equipment Used:
  • Operates equipment and vehicles common to tree maintenance; computers, tablets, and similar devices.
