Job Description

The ASU Helios Decision Center for Educational Excellence seeks a Full Stack Developer to design, develop, and implement front-end and back-end software for various interactive visual web applications. This individual will design and build applications and visualizations that will inform actions that educators, policymakers, and civic leaders can take to address and improve educational outcomes for Arizona students.

The ASU Helios Decision Center for Educational Excellence is a center focused on improving student outcomes through the use of data, analyses, visualizations and the involvement of stakeholders in the education system. The Center produces visualizations on topics like high school outcomes, the impact of COVID, and how students do in community college and university; conducts impact projects such as offering admission to qualified students before they apply; and informs stakeholders and policymakers on important education issues.

This role provides a significant opportunity to use design and technical expertise to have a direct social impact at scale. Through the development of impactful web applications, this role will advance the Center’s mission to understand and impact the current state of education and economic mobility in Arizona and the United States. Essential Duties

  • Works with team to establish and improve front-end development standards, including architecture of web components, approach to styling, high-quality graphic standards, brand consistency, and user interface standards
  • Designs, develops, builds, and tests beautiful, frictionless visualization experiences on mobile and desktop
  • Collaborates in designing back-end architecture
  • Develops and manage well-functioning databases and applications
  • Writes effective APIs
  • Tests, troubleshoots, debugs, and optimizes software to ensure responsiveness, efficiency, and accuracy;
  • Creates security and data protection settings
  • Creates and maintains requirements, guides, and technical documentation;
  • Works with data scientists and analysts to improve software
  • Works with our internal teams and community stakeholders to translate high-level objectives into user flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes that lead to intuitive user experiences and can be used to direct development and implementation
  • Engages problem-solving skills on various technology-related projects and takes on other tasks as assigned or directed


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree Information Technology, Computer Science or closely related. 5 years web, graphic design and database including creating and updating table structures and views as well as CSS development; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Three (3 ) years of front-end experience and six (6) years of back-end experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of front-end design and development, with demonstrated skill working with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and at least one JavaScript framework (e.g. React, Node.js, Angular)
  • Experience developing complex data visualizations with knowledge of data visualization libraries (e.g. D3, Highcharts, eCharts)
  • Experience developing back-end systems with at least one framework (e.g. Django, Rails)
  • Experience working with RDBMS datastores (e.g. MS SQL, Postgres, MySQL)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of typography, color, contrast, information architecture, layout, and composition with attention to detail and user experience
  • Experience in creating designs and prototypes that are ready for implementation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the full development software lifecycle with the ability to contribute to all steps: design, prototype, development, delivery and deployment, and ongoing iteration and maintenance
  • Experience with user testing, collecting feedback, and modifying designs based on those learnings
  • Experience collaborating with both technical and non-technical team members
  • Experience handling sensitive data with preference to candidates comfortable with FERPA and educational data
  • Experience delivering solutions to educators and policymakers
