Grounds Maintenance Supervisor

Job Description

Definition
Under general supervision of the Facility Manager, oversees the day-to-day activities of grounds maintenance workers involved in the maintenance and upkeep of the public use areas, grounds and parks of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt and considered a DRIVING position subject to working on-call and weekend hours.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. Examples of Tasks
1. Supervises, manages, and performs day-to-day grounds maintenance operations at assigned facilities. Plans, schedules, prioritizes, assigns, and reviews daily work activities for assigned work crews. Coordinates heavy equipment operations requirements to support ground maintenance and landscaping needs.

2. Ensures the timely maintenance and upkeep of Community grass, shrubs, trees, flowers, cutting of weeds, etc. Operates and maintains landscape irrigation systems and controls. Oversees and ensures the daily watering of grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers. Inspects landscaping on a regular basis to ensure that plants, shrubs, trees, grass, etc. are properly maintained and replaced as needed. Conducts regular checks of Community grounds to ensure they remain free from trash and debris; dispatch work crews as necessary for clean-up. Ensures all exterior trash cans within designated work areas are emptied on a regular basis.

3. Develops and coordinates training of assigned staff on the requirements of their positions. Trains assigned staff in a variety of grounds maintenance techniques and practices and ensures the regular and safe application of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to keep landscaping healthy and attractive.

4. Conducts regular inspections of work areas to monitor quality of service and work crew compliance with safety standards. Ensures all assigned staff have the proper tools, personal protective equipment, and other items to properly complete their assigned tasks.

5. Evaluates employees work performance and performs timely performance appraisals. Responds to staff questions regarding assignments, workloads, and other employee issues. Monitors and recognizes staff effectiveness and achievements as well as corrects deficiencies in performance.

6. Responds to emergency situations and performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance program and agency operation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of general landscaping principles, practices, and techniques, including those used in desert areas.
  • Knowledge of public administration principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance including the hazards and safety precautions associated with their use.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and controls (pumps, piping, heads, computer controls, timers, etc.).

  • Skill in planning and assigning the work of subordinate staff to ensure projects are completed in accordance with established standards, guidelines, and time frames.
  • Skill in preparing reports of project costs, including estimates of materials, supplies, and labor.
  • Skill in supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate staff.
  • Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping work, including backhoes, sprayers, and mowers.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill in using personal computer and related software.

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with tribal employees and community members and other customers.
  • Ability to manage, supervise and evaluate personnel; able to gather, interprets and compiles reports.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, climb, and bend.
  • Ability to work outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Ability to establish preventative maintenance programs for landscaping.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED, and a minimum of three (3) years' full time experience in grounds maintenance, at least one (1) year of which involved lead or supervisory responsibilities.

Equivalency - Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job will be considered when filling the position.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
Special Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check. Employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
