Overall Job Objective

What Success Looks Like In This Job

Perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance of grounds and landscaping, such as: snow removal, landscaping projects, mowing lawns, and equipment maintenance. When available will supervise and direct a crew of Jail Trustees in performing these duties and the ones listed below.



Examples of Duties for Success

  • Perform a full range of grounds maintenance duties, with Trustees when available, at the Detention Facility and other County owned properties.
  • Duties include but are not limited to: watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, aerating, flower bed planting, pruning of bushes, trees and shrubs, raking leaves, sweeping parking lots, trash pick-up, and other duties as necessary.
  • Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the irrigation systems at the Detention Facility and other County owned properties, with Trustees when available. Replace and adjust sprinkler heads, maintain controllers, assist in irrigation system installation, repairs and winterizing.
  • Perform snow removal, with the help of Trustees when available, at the Detention Facility and other County owned properties.
  • Provide and document training to Trustees on safety procedures and preventive maintenance for equipment that will be used.
  • Be sure inmates Trustees are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Operate a full range of maintenance vehicles and equipment including trucks, mowers, edgers, blowers, tractors, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Maintain tools and equipment. Perform preventative maintenance on grounds equipment.
  • Identify maintenance needs and safety hazards and report to appropriate staff.
  • Identify proper equipment needs for each assigned project.
  • Determine appropriate methods, sequences, and layout of work detail.
  • Assist in the construction of various projects.
  • Deal courteously and tactfully with the public and internal customers in response to inquiries and complaints.
  • May perform custodial duties as needed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications for Success

  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance of landscaped areas for County facilities.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures to maintain and repair grounds equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of chemical pesticides and herbicides and their uses.
  • Knowledge of watering requirements for lawns, trees, plants, and various types of soil.
  • Ability to operate, program, repair, and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Ability to operate a variety of grounds equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools.
  • Ability to perform maintenance, landscaping, reconstruction, and repair work.
  • Ability to interpret diagrams, plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to lead and train inmate workers.
  • Basic theory and practices of electricity and plumbing.
  • Computer Skills: Proficient with basic computer programs and work order systems including MS Office, Outlook, and JDE.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
More Qualifications for Success

  • Experience: Two (2) years in the maintenance of grounds or related facilities.
  • Education and Training: High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • License or Certificate: Valid driver's license with no restrictions.
  • Background Check: Must pass a criminal background check.

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

Physical Activities:
  • 2/3 of the time in the job: Ability to sit, walk, talk, hear, stand, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, crawl, twist, climb or balance, and lift 50 pounds;
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feed; ability to reach with hands or arms.
Exposure to Elements:
  • Exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, electrical hazards, vibration, chemicals, dust, toxic waste, mechanical hazards.
Mental Abilities:
  • 2/3 of the time in the job: Ability to compare; analyze, communicate, coordinate, instruct, evaluate, have interpersonal skills, and compile.
Work Environment:
  • 2/3 of the time in the job: Work near moving mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and risk of electric shock.
Vision Demands:
  • Close Vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distant vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision, and depth vision.
