Job Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide a pleasant, positive and calm environment for residents.
  • Assistance in activities of daily living that do not require direct care to residents in an environment that promotes their rights, dignity, freedom of choice and individuality.
  • Respects and abides by Resident Rights.
  • Keep resident room neat and tidy, to include making beds and changing bed linens as needed.
  • Store and move supplies, such as linens, adult disposable briefs (Attends).
  • Handles, inventories, and protects resident belongings.
  • Stock ice chest with ice.
  • Offer verbal encouragement to residents during meals.
  • Set dining room tables. Pour drinks for each meal. Keep dining room clean.
  • Ensure water pitchers in resident rooms filled with ice and water per residents orders for fluid consistency.
  • Observe residents physical, mental and emotional conditions and reports any changes to the nursing staff.
  • Perform visual one on one observation of residents as required.
  • Respond to all call lights promptly and courteously in facilities with call lights. Keep call light within reach of non-ambulatory resident when unattended.
  • Clean residents wheel chairs and geri-chairs.
  • Assists in the support of company sponsored events, activities and functions.
  • Performs indirect resident care activities consistent with the facilitys policies and procedures.
  • Practicing universal precaution.
  • Provide residents with one on one interaction while interact with the residents in a manner that displays warmth and promotes a caring environment.
  • Transport and escort residents as necessary for appointments such as at the beauty shop, attending activities, doctor appointments, or church services.
  • Prepare rooms for new admissions.
  • Assist with admissions, transfers and discharges of residents.
  • Mark residents personal belongings and make inventory of residents personal possessions.
  • Removing dirty linen and trash from units.
  • Perform all job duties in accordance with prescribed safety and infection control procedures, including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where indicated and proper disposal of soiled materials.
  • Setting up residents for meals.
  • Attend and assist with staff development activities.
  • Complete safety checks including but not limited to: 15 minute safety checks, 30 minute safety checks and courtyard checks.
  • Apply sunscreen to residents as needed.
  • Deliver attends to residents upon receipt to the unit from central supply.
  • Clean resident hands and faces prior to and after meals.
  • Complete hydration checks and ensure fluids are being offered to residents during 15 minute, 30 minute and courtyard safety checks.
  • Any delegated tasks that do not include direct patient care and do not require certification and/or licensure.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Safety rules, policies and procedures, infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Facility emergency/disaster response and evacuation procedures.
  • Full understanding of all aspects of residents rights, including the right to be free of restraints and free of abuse. Is responsible for promptly reporting to the charge nurse or administrative staff incidents or evidence of resident abuse or violation of residents rights.
  • Abuse reporting and suspicion of a crime procedures.

Skill in:

  • Use and care of equipment, tools and materials used in resident care activities.
  • Working independently to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Following and maintaining safety standards.
  • Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.

Ability to:

  • To perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel, residents and resident family members.
  • Read and write clearly.
  • Understand and follow, quickly and accurately, oral and written instructions.
  • Prioritize, including excellent time management skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality and work under pressure in a dynamic environment with changing demands and priorities.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to many types of situations, including crisis situations.
  • Monitor time and stress levels to ensure effective assistance is provided to the nursing staff and residents.
  • Comply with facility policies and procedures.

WORK CONTACTS

Regular contact with associate personnel, residents, resident family members and visitors.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires constant physical activities including standing, walking, lifting, bending, stooping, pulling, stretching, turning, grasping and reaching.
  • Must be able to bear weight of 100 pounds or more
  • Visual acuity to determine the accuracy, thoroughness and quality of work assigned.
  • Aural acuity to receive detailed information through oral communication, often from persons with speech impairment.
  • Must be able to wear protective equipment such as gloves, masks, gowns, and goggles and gait belts.
  • Frequent exposure to fumes or airbone particles and some mechanical equipment.
  • Exposure to a variety of patient conditions and elements.
  • Regular requirement of long hours and frequent weekend work.
  • Frequent interactions with persons who may be verbally abusive to include yelling and cursing.
  • Frequent interaction with persons who are disabled, elderly and emotionally upset and who may be emotional, verbally and physical abusive.
  • Requires the ability to work with frequent interruptions with a workload that may be unpredictable and difficult to manage at times.
  • Safety-sensitive position pursuant to A.R.S. 23-493.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Must be willing to attend nursing assistant training classes at time of hire.
  • Must be able to effectively read and write.
  • Minimum experience of one (1) year in geriatric care preferred.
  • Failure to complete nursing assistant training classes will result in termination of employment.

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT(S)

  • Obtain/maintain Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Card at employees expense.
  • Obtain/maintain CPR Certification.
  • Must obtain certification by the Arizona State Board of Nursing for Nursing Assistant within six months
  • Complete annual Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Complete required in-service training.
