Definition

Definition: Under general supervision from the Specialty Care Practice Manager, oversee the ophthalmic technicians including training and quality, safety and ensures the clinic specific policies are followed. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Examples of Tasks

Clinical:
  • Assists the Optometrist in all phases of care and treatment, as needed.
  • Assists with all routine, advanced, and specialty procedures, including triaging, examinations and operating procedural equipment.
  • Works with the necessary tools specific to the Optometry department.
  • Provides compassionate care for all patient age groups, especially children, youth, and elders.
  • Performs routine tasks assigned by the Optometrist.
  • Processes and handles necessary patient documents and materials.
  • Provides patient education and instruction in the prevention of eye diseases and post-service and operative care.
  • Maintains professional knowledge regarding new procedures and emerging issues in eye health.
  • Maintains oversight of exam rooms and clinic supplies, ensuring they are adequately stocked and notifying management when orders are needed.
  • Supervises and assists ophthalmic technicians in accurately recording patient interviews, medical histories, and chief complaints.
  • Oversee the performance of various diagnostic measurements and operation of equipment.
  • Maintains protocols for cleanliness of exam rooms and diagnostic equipment between patients and at the end of each day.
  • Facilitates a smooth patient flow through effective supervision and coordination of technician activities.
  • Reviews treatment plans with patients, providing clear instructions regarding medication usage and follow-up care.
  • Oversees the arrangement of referrals to external physicians as necessary.
  • Act as a point of contact for technicians seeking advice or reporting equipment repairs, ensuring timely resolution of issues.


Administrative : Responsibilities includes supervision of ophthalmic technicians, triaging of patients, creation of training programs, supply ordering, functioning as an ophthalmic technician as needed during staffing shortfalls, and participation in quality assurance and process improvement projects.
  • Provides full administrative supervision and oversees the day-today operations of all ophthalmic technicians.
  • Serves as a communication liaison with the Clinical Director of Optometry, staff Optometrists, Service Line Chief, and ophthalmic technicians.
  • In coordination with the Clinical Director of Optometry and Specialty Care Practice Manager, prepares shift schedules and coordinates time off.
  • Maintains assigned division oversight by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Participates in problem-solving and troubleshooting activities involving the ophthalmic technicians and other intradepartmental staff.
  • Review goals and objectives for evaluation, evaluates performance of assigned department staff and conducts timely performance evaluations.
  • Follows all departmental and Community policies and procedures.
  • Maintains department direction with River People Health Center standards of operations.
  • Works with the Service Line Chief and Specialty Care Practice Manager to set and maintain the department's budget for expenses and revenues.
  • Evaluates processes and procedures within the scope of the assigned division operations for quality workflow processes, recommending changes to meet organizational goals.
  • Ensures that staff are qualified and trained with tools necessary to support the successful execution of their duties.
  • Conducts all patient interactions in accordance with HIPAA regulations to maintain patient confidence and protect confidential information.
  • Maintains current and updated professional knowledge and proficiency of the scope of service of the assigned division through continuing education, staff meetings, training, and conferences.
  • Approves leave requests, provides advice, counsels and instructions to employees on both work and administrative matters.
  • Oversees daily operations and ensures that both the incumbent and technicians performs appropriate and accurate patient workups and follow quality guidelines.
  • Coordinates technician staffing of diagnostic testing procedures for patients and ensures that STAT/Critical exams are performed in a timely manner.
  • Act as a participant and leader in staff meetings, committees, QA projects, and teams in a collaborative manner in order to attain organizational and departmental goals.
  • Maintains inventory and supply records. Follows cost-control standards of the organization and department.
  • Schedules and supervises the work of assigned staff to achieve the defined business goals and to ensure smooth workflow in the department.
  • Sets work goals for team members and monitors measurable outcomes in accuracy, timeliness, productivity and service quality.
  • Collaborates with HR and payroll departments to ensure timely and accurate processing of employee time and labor data.
  • Provides leadership, work goals and coaching for staff. Selects, hires and trains staff for assigned area. Conducts performance reviews, coaching/disciplinary actions and terminations of assigned staff following the Community's personnel policies.


Miscellaneous: Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics :

  • Knowledge of the history, customs, culture, traditions, and government of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of medical, public health, and social service resources available to Community members.


  • Skill in the use of practice management software applications, calculators, copy machines, and other essential office equipment.
  • Skill with verbal and written communication and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, clients, families, community groups, and health professionals.
  • Skill managing various employee types in stressful situations.


  • Ability to be committed to the observation of aseptic techniques in handling sterile products and equipment, and the maintenance of a stringently clean work area at all times.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with colleagues, subordinates, supervisors, health care professionals, Tribal officials, representatives of resource agencies, patients, and Community members.
  • Ability to work as a productive member of a team.
  • Ability to deal with sensitive issues and maintain appropriate, professional, and confidential relationships.
  • Ability to incorporate cultural differences, health beliefs, and learning styles.
  • Ability to develop and implement program protocols as well as identify and address programmatic problems.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required; Graduation from an accredited program relevant to the position AND prior work experience in a related office.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid or receive certification within six months of hire date.
  • Possess and maintain certifications relevant to positions supervising: CAO, COT, along with expanded function certifications such as CPO, CPOA, CPOT, ETT, COMT, or OSC,


Experience: Minimum of 3 years full-time work experience managing and leading staff in professional clinical work environment or equivalent experience.
  • 2 years' experience in relevant positions, such as an Optometric Technician and/or Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Experience working with Native Americans strongly preferred.


Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position will be considered.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member who closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
