Histo Technologist, 40 hrs/week- Day Shift

I. Position Function:

Under the direction of the Lead Tech and the Histology Supervisor.

Perform a variety of technical, analytical and clinical duties necessary for the preparation, dissection, embedding, cutting, staining, cover slipping and labeling of surgical, neuropathology, autopsy and necropsy specimens.

Perform Cytology Prep as needed.

II. Job Relationships:

Reports to the Histology Supervisor.

Daily work is overseen by the Lead Histology Technologist, and the Histology Supervisor.

Receives guidance from medical consultants.

Maintains good rapport with vendors and suppliers.

Works collaboratively with all hospital staff, physicians and patients.

III. Authority:

Has the authority to decide whether tissue specimens are properly processed and determine if said tissue needs further processing.

Has the authority to organize personal work station to suit needs cooperatively.

Has the authority to change equipment maintenance, i.e. changing solutions in processor, if necessary.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

1.) "Provides superior customer service to internal and external clients, customers,

and patients as referenced in the Service Excellence Standards."

Performs all histology laboratory functions including, but not limited to, processing, dissection, embedding, cutting, cryotomy, ultra-tome microtomy, staining, special staining, cover slipping and labeling of surgical, consult, neuropathology, autopsy and necropsy tissue in an accurate and timely manner.

Perform Cytology prep as needed.

Perform all required Quality Control/Quality Improvement procedures, make any corrections and document results accurately and timely. Report to Supervisor any problems that require intervention.

Correctly operate and maintain all laboratory equipment necessary to safely and accurately produce diagnostically necessary material.

Maintains all records in a complete, accurate and legible manner.

Insures ongoing compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies including, but not limited to, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA, DPH, HCFA, NCCLS and CLIA. Meets departmental need for inspection readiness at all times.

Insures Preventative and Corrective Maintenance are performed on all instruments as needed.

Keep current on new technologies, procedures and methodologies that may enhance patient care and/or increase efficiency in the laboratory.

Help develop new procedures and methodologies to enhance patient care and/or increase efficiency in the laboratory as deemed necessary by Histology Supervisor, Laboratory Director or Medical Consultants.

Insure adequate inventory of supplies appropriate for test volume by monitoring on hand supplies and informing immediate supervisor of need in a timely manner or placing orders as needed.

Provide and ensure proper usage of all required safety equipment.

Follows all organizational, departmental and section policies for safety, Universal Precaution, Hazardous Waste, etc.

Dispose of hazardous waste in safe and proper manner.

Conduct self in a professional manner at all times (apparel, telephone conversation, staff/peer interaction, etc.)

Strive for continuous improvements in service and quality.

B. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions:

Participate in technical support for physicians and research groups.

Assist Histology Supervisor, Lead Histology Technologist and other hospital management with special projects as requested.

Perform in services as needed for staff and public.

V. Reporting Requirements:

Reports immediately to the Histology Supervisor or Manager any deviation of normal operation.

Reports immediately to the Histology Supervisor or Manager any unusual occurrences related to the laboratory.

VI. Accountability:

Shall be held accountable for maintaining the confidentiality, security, accuracy and privacy of all hospital related, medical staff related and/or patient related data and information.

Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures including Infection control policies.

Shall be held accountable for accurately labeling specimens, slides, chemicals and reagents.

Shall be held accountable for the safe handling, usage and disposal of specimens, slides, chemicals and reagents.

Shall be held accountable for filling out QC forms as well as daily maintenance reports for laboratory equipment and procedures as required.

Shall be held accountable for the accuracy of cutting and staining of all surgical, autopsy, necropsy and neuropathology specimens.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:

Baccalaureate of Science in Medical Technology or GED required.

Minimum Experience:

Experience in a histology laboratory performing routine histology functions preferred.

Minimum skills/abilities:

Embedding, cutting (microtomy), routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining, pap and special stains, cover slipping and labeling of surgical and autopsy tissue preferred.

Certification/Licensure:

A.S.C.P. preferred
