Position Summary

The Department of Neurosciences seeks a highly motivated and organized individual for a Health Sciences Research Tech 2 position to join our research group. The ideal candidate will perform mRNA and non-coding RNA and protein isolation and quantification procedures such as real-time PCR, in situ hybridization, western blotting, ELISA, and immunostaining. Genotype and maintain rodent (mouse) colonies and perform survival surgical procedures such as lid suture under supervision. Research is conducted in a neuroscience research laboratory on rodent and human postmortem brain and stem-cell derived neuronal culture tissues and is designed to evaluate the effects of novel non-coding RNAs in brain development, plasticity and disease. The position requires following controlled protocol parameters, having excellent documentation and observational skills, and paying attention to detail. Prepares data, samples, and/or specimens, and sets up and operates moderately complex laboratory equipment. Conducts assignments and provides initial summary analyses to investigator.

Performs standard research protocol, under detailed and controlled research parameters, in a health sciences laboratory, clinical, and/or field research setting. Conducts a variety of standardized tests and procedures; prepares data, samples, and/or specimens, and sets up and operates standard laboratory, clinical, or field testing equipment of standard complexity. Verifies and records data, and performs preliminary manipulation of experiment and/or test results, providing basic data analyses, summaries, and interpretations.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in life sciences.

Experience in RNA (preferably non-coding RNA) research.

Interest in learning or the ability to run and troubleshoot, PCR, RT-PCR, Western Blots, ELISAs, immunostaining.

Experience in handling and caring for laboratory rodents.

Basic understanding of scientific methodology.

Interest or experience in tissue samples from rodents, or human stem cell-derived neuronal cultures.

Experience with Laboratory management.

Monitoring, stocking, and procuring research supplies.

Demonstrated ability to collect and process biochemical data using scientific software (e.g., Database software (Access), Word, Powerpoint, Prism & Excel)
