The Department of Neurosciences seeks a Health Sciences Research Tech 3 to perform research directed at the study of neural development, plasticity and degeneration. Research models include a combination of in vitro human pluripotent stem cells as well as in vivo mouse models. Techniques to be used may include but are not limited to cell culture, recombinant DNA engineering and expression in mammalian and bacterial systems, rodent colony maintenance, rodent behavioral assays, cardiac perfusions, brain extraction and processing, western blot analysis, co-immunoprecipitation, lenti/adeno/retroviral production, immunocyto/histochemistry, fluorescence/confocal microscopy, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), bioinformatics/statistical analysis.

The Health Sciences Research Tech 3 performs standard research protocols under detailed and controlled research parameters in a health sciences laboratory setting. This position conducts a variety of standardized tests and procedures; prepares samples and/or specimens; sets up and operates standard laboratory equipment of standard complexity; verifies and records data, and performs preliminary manipulation of experiment and/or test results, providing basic data analyses, summaries, and interpretations. In addition, opportunities for mentoring laboratory research students in various assays will be available and encouraged. Laboratory organization, including molecular reagents, laboratory equipment and supplies, cleaning and sterilization of glassware and other supplies, as well as performing ordering and document organization and maintenance are also expected.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry or related field

Preference given to individuals who can demonstrate previous experience with:

Familiarity with the basic principles of neurons, synaptic transmission

Rodent models; animal handling, behavioral analysis, tissue processing

Mammalian cell culture, western immunoblotting and immunoprecipitation, immunocytochemistry

Molecular biology recombinant DNA methodology, including subcloning DNA fragments, plasmid preparation and analysis

Biochemical calculations (e.g., molarity, etc.) and preparation of solutions

Making research presentations (i.e. a poster presentation at an undergraduate research forum, etc.) or publications (including abstracts)
