Position Summary

The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) seeks a Research Tech 3 for the Animal Models Shared Resource to assist with technical duties associated animal-related research & experiments performed in the core. This critical core facility is used by numerous laboratories at UNM and is an important core facility within the UNMCCC. The Research Tech 3 will be an integral part of the Animal Models team working together with the technical director of the facility and under the guidance of the Faculty Director in order to facilitate animal research for the users of the shared resource.

The Animal Models Shared Resource has become a major resource in providing guidance for murine animal research including patient-derived xenografts for cancer research. The team ensures that users of the facility receive exceptional service in a timely, economical and efficient manner. Furthermore, the Research Tech 3 ensures that specialized services in animal handling, minor surgeries and specimen collection are provided ethically, with complete documentation and adherence to all IACUC regulations.

The selected candidate will need:

1. Extensive experience with rodents, particularly mice: handling animals, maintaining a breeding colony, etc.

2. Competence in performing IP, tail vein IV, and subcutaneous injections, tumor monitoring, and drug delivery via oral gavage.

3. Competence in performing minor surgeries, for example, wound suturing, orthotopic tumor implantation.

4. Competent to perform specimen collection: Blood collection via retro-orbital, tail artery, and cardiac puncture. Experience with necropsy of mice.

5. Flexibility to work on some weekends or longer hours on occasion, based on study requirements.


The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 146 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexicos cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 102 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $36.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published 930 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 530 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with rats including handling, injections and necropsy

Retro-orbital, intra-cardiac, intra-pleural injections in mice.

Experience with complex rodent surgeries.

Additional Requirements Finalists should be prepared to provide official educational transcripts if selected for hire.
