Job Description

Facilities Management, Residential Facilities, seeks an HVAC Refrigeration Technician to service, install, repair, overhaul and maintain heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems in the student housing facilities.

 

Salary Range

$23.46 per hour or commensurate of experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Essential Duties

This is a working position with responsibility and accountability for problem solving and resolution to keep buildings and systems operational at all times. This position requires a technical skill set to support cutting edge technology buildings. 

 

The various types of spaces and equipment located within these buildings may include but are not limited to:

·       High bay spaces

·       Administrative and office spaces

·       Humidity Controls

·       VAV airflow control

·       Air Flow/Psychometrics and Air Distribution

·       Air Balancing

·       Air Handlers/Residential & Commercial

·       Makeup Air Handlers

·       Shaft and Pump Alignment

·       General Exhaust systems

·       Variable Frequency Drives

·       Heating and Cooling equipment/Heat Pumps, Condensers, Packaged units

·       Direct Expansion Heating and Cooling equipment

·       Chillers

·       Chill Water Cooling Systems

·       Chill Water Pumps

·       Boilers

·       Steam Pumps

·       Steam Condensate pumps and associated systems

·       Hot Water Pumps

·       Steam systems and associated steam traps, pumps and control devices

·       Clean Steam Generators

·       Maintain preventative maintenance records. 

·       Read gauges and instruments and adjust mechanisms. 

·       Operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines.

·       Handle CFC refrigerant.

·       Drive university vehicles.

·       Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday 8:00AM – 4:30PM

 

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of progressively responsible HVAC or refrigeration experience; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable skills, knowledge and abilities have been achieved. Some positions may require chlorofluorocarbons certification upon employment. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

 

Desired Qualifications

Experience in:

·       High density residential facilities (i.e. apartment complexes, condominiums, residence halls or student housing facilities) maintenance and repair; rebuilding; and installation of HVAC mechanical and refrigeration equipment

·       Commercial/industrial maintenance and repair; rebuilding; and installation of HVAC mechanical and refrigeration equipment

·       Residential/commercial/industrial HVAC troubleshooting for Heating/Cooling/Electrical

·       Customer Service

 

Evidence of: 

·       EPA 608 Universal CFC certification

·       Effective communication skills

 

Working Environment

·       Utilize power tools (e.g. drills, generators, saws, lifts, vacuum equipment).

·       Climb ladders, ladder wells, and stairs. 

·       Work off ladders using hand tools and power tools to include working off lift platforms and boom trucks at heights above six feet.

·       Use lifting, moving, and rigging equipment to safely move, transfer, or relocate heavy equipment.

·       Operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines. 

·       Handle CFC refrigerant. 

·       Work in adverse working conditions such as confined spaces (e.g. tunnels, man holes, vaults), dirty areas, low lighting, and extreme temperatures.

·       Stoop, bend, and reach. 

·       Walk throughout campus. Lift up to 75 pounds.

·       Drive University vehicles.

·       Ability to push and/or pull approximately 200-300 pound weight loaded on wheeled maintenance carts to transport tools and equipment throughout campus to job site.

·       May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator). 

·       Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.

This position is located in Facilities Management on the Tempe campus. 

 

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

 

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than state appropriations. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.

 

Ability to obtain Chlorofluorocarbon Certification within five months of employment date.

 

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include, audiogram, asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test.

 

This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.

 

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.
