Position Summary

The UNM HSC Animal Resource Facility is seeking a detail-oriented, driven individual to join our team as a Lab Animal Tech 1.

The Lab Animal Tech 1 is responsible for;

Cleaning and sanitizing cages according to prescribed standards while maintain the cage wash equipment.

Prepping animal caging, providing food, water, and other routine husbandry care for a variety of animal species (primarily laboratory rodents)

Observing animals on a daily basis to assess health, environmental conditions, and social environment; monitor animals for impact of research and advises veterinarian of same.

Maintaining cage cards, animal histories, and other records as required

Receiving and verifying shipments against purchase orders, bills of lading, and other documents

Storing animal feed and supplies in a neat and orderly manner; rotating feed as required to ensure freshness; monitoring feed supplies to ensure adequate availability

Maintaining procedural laboratories, treatment rooms, and storage areas on a daily basis including sweeping and mopping floors

Performing routine maintenance and/or basic mechanical repair of various machinery/animal housing components

Practicing safety, environmental and/or infection control methods.

Conditions of Employment
  • This position is represented by a labor union and is subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Must obtain certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) within 12 months of date of hire.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, which may include directly related college-level student practicum.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Push, pull or lift up to 50 pounds

standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day

Evaluate the health and well-being of animals and environmental conditions for various laboratory animal species

Safely use cleaning equipment and supplies

Operate and maintain cage-washing equipment

Understand and follow verbal and written instructions

Accurately and legible record observations and information

Interact productively with individuals at all levels within the organization
