Job Description

The College of Integrated Sciences and Arts’ School of Applied Sciences and Arts (SASA) is looking for a Laboratory Coordinator who will report directly to the Faculty Head and will work collaboratively with the Laboratory Manager. The Laboratory Coordinator will oversee and coordinate operational activities in teaching laboratories, ensuring that experiments are set up and functioning properly; assist in reviewing applications for instructional aide and other student worker positions; train and supervise instructional assistants; develop new experiments and demonstrations; keep track of laboratory equipment and supplies.


Salary Range

$45,000 - $50,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Assist faculty and/or researchers with planning the experiments, recommending supplies and equipment.
  • Set up, or coordinate students or staff who set up laboratory experiments, including equipment and supplies; disassemble or supervises students or staff who disassemble laboratory experiments or clean facilities.
  • Coordinate/perform complete preparation, dismantling and waste disposal of academic science laboratory courses, including lower division Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Microbiology courses.
  • Update and keep current laboratory inventories, including but not limited to: biological inventories, supply/equipment inventories and electronic safety data sheets. Restock supplies for the laboratories.
  • Ensure safe storage of chemicals according to ASU Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Manage class fee budgets and purchase supplies and materials needed for the laboratories.
  • Provide proper dispose of solid and liquid hazardous waste.
  • Assist with training of Faculty, Instructors, Instructional Assistants, and Student Workers in laboratory safety policies and procedures and the appropriate and safe use of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in hiring (as needed) and supervision of Instructional Assistants, verifying all required lab safety training is current.
  • Answer questions concerning experiments and train on equipment usage and proper techniques.
  • Attend meetings with faculty, researchers and/or instructional assistants to discuss changes and modifications in laboratory experiments.
  • Recommend changes to lab procedures to enhance laboratory experience. Work in conjunction with the faculty to ensure these changes are updated and current with the IBC disclosures.
  • Participate in laboratory curriculum development.
  • Monitor equipment for proper functioning, perform minor repairs and calibrations on equipment and contact appropriate party to perform major repairs.
  • Coordinate and facilitate care, use, purchase, transport, and dissection of human cadavers.
  • Bacterial cultivation, maintenance, and sample preparation of various media agar plates.
  • Ensure that the proper number of tests and handouts are available for each laboratory.
  • Maintain labs for teaching purposes.
  • Adapt laboratory protocols and procedures for students with disabilities and service animals.
  • Participate on outreach activities involving laboratory demonstrations and experiments.
  • Provide oversight and enforcement of waste and safety policies and safety training of personnel in the teaching and research lab as designated by EH&S and OSHA.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND one year laboratory activities experience; OR, Five years of laboratory activities or related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biology or closely related field.


Working Environment

  • Many activities are performed in an environmentally controlled lab/office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time in a classroom or laboratory and travel moderate distances to perform work.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories including but not limited to lab coat, gloves, safety goggles, and close-toed shoes.
  • May require early morning or evening hours depending on teaching schedule.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
