Overall Job Objective

What Success Looks Like In This Job

Provide legal motions and notary services to the inmates, process program rosters, maintain a leisure reading collection, provide resources to the inmates, and assist other sections within the Programs Unit.

Examples of Duties for Success

  • Report to the Programs Supervisor.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and post orders.
  • Attend required trainings and practice safety/security awareness.
  • Utilize effective interpersonal communication skills (verbal, nonverbal, written, listening)
  • Provide professional customer service.
  • Promote a positive team atmosphere.
  • Prepare reports as directed and meet required deadlines.
  • Daily use: Telephone/Two-Way Radio/Jail Management System/Judicial Databases/Microsoft Office Applications
  • Obtain notary certification while in training and maintain certification throughout employment in this position.
  • Work with the inmate population, individually and/or in a group setting, while maintaining control of the environment.
    • Supervise inmate workers
  • Assist inmates with notary, photocopy, and law library needs. Maintain law kiosks.
  • Assist volunteers with program needs.
  • Assist with production of the Inmate Newsletter.
  • Catalog, store, issue, and receive library materials including: Books, Recreation Materials, Periodicals, etc. Maintain accurate records and inventory of all library materials.
  • Thoroughly check books and materials before they are shelved.
  • Process program sign-up sheets, complete data entry, and distribute program rosters.
  • Process religious diet requests and disseminate religious materials.
  • Prepare books and other reading materials for dissemination. Repair books upon collection.
  • Conduct recreational and educational programs as needed.
  • Solicit and collect donated books and other reading materials.
  • Ensure inmates in segregation housing receive access to reading materials and other allowed materials.
  • Establish and maintain community resources of programs and agencies available to inmates upon release.
  • Provide community resource information to inmates and assist inmates in registering for Medicaid when appropriate.
  • Notify the Programs Supervisor when materials and supplies need ordered.
  • Temporarily fill in for the Mail Processor and Mail Tech (mail pick up, sorting/distributing to appropriate units, pick up mail for inmates and checking incoming/outgoing mail)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for Success

  • Required minimum 21 years of age
  • Must have a valid Colorado Drivers License
  • High School Diploma minimum is required
  • Two years of college in addition to experience working with inmates in Correctional Facility or similar situation is preferred
  • Must be able to type 35 wpm with accuracy

  • Employee should possess mental alertness and the ability to adapt to changing routines.
  • Knowledge of computer systems (MS Office Suite)
  • Excellent customer service and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills are necessary.
  • Knowledge of basic legal terminology is preferred.
  • Must have general knowledge of law library functions and the ability to complete basic research. Previous library experience is helpful but not necessary.
  • Ability to be assertive and self-motivated.
