Lead Engineer, Structural and Additive Process - Knoxville, TN Location

Job Description

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Materials and Design Engineers to explore new methodologies of creating vehicle structures-specifically using additive manufacturing
  • Apply the learning from process research into application in the context of Local Motors production vehicle programs
  • Work with the manufacturing department to inform design language from the construction methodologies
  • Leverage analysis tools and techniques to help guide development
  • Identify material selection and integration of multimaterial construction including polymers, composites, and metals
  • Collaborate with Advanced Material Engineering team to identify new materials for vehicle and other additive structures
  • Managing R&D projects from concept to functional hardware

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering or directly related field
  • 2-3+ years of experience in vehicle, aerospace, or similar structural design capacity
  • Extensive experience with a major commercial CAD package
  • Proven experience with structural calculations using finite element analysis and hand calculation approaches
  • Experience with Hyperworks, ANSYS, Abaqus, ect.
  • 3D printing experience
  • Design and execute scientific testing methodology
  • Experience with mechanical testing/validation of original designs
  • Validation and verification of FEA results vs. test data
  • General hands on aptitude
  • Understand multi material construction including polymers, composites, and metals

Desired Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D in Engineering or related field
  • Experience with Siemens NX
  • Experience with Hyperworks static and explicit analysis
  • Experience with structural design with composite materials
  • Exposure to large scale additive manufacturing processes
  • Experience with vehicle crash safety standards and testing procedure
  • Fabrication skills using typical shop tools and materials, (welding is a plus)
  • Design for manufacturing, DFMEA, ect.
  • Managing R&D projects from concept to functional hardware
