Definition

Under general supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, aids with the oversight of the grounds maintenance workers and performs the day-to-day maintenance activities of the assigned areas within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt position and considered a DRIVING position, subject to working on call and weekend hours.

Examples of Tasks

Distinguishing Features: The Lead Grounds Maintenance Worker will fill in for the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor as necessary and sets the example for other Grounds Maintenance Workers in the field.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)

Tasks:
1. Aids with the supervision, training, and management of the grounds maintenance workers as assigned by the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. Assists with the development, training, and evaluation of Grounds Maintenance Worker I & II positions.

2. Leads, assists, and monitors grounds maintenance workers performing a variety of landscape maintenance work, including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, preparing flower beds for planting and planting flowers, applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, removing weeds, debris, and dead plants, and ensuring watering schedule is maintained.

3. Installs, operates, and maintains irrigation systems and drip lines, including pumps and controllers for assigned grounds and athletic fields. Inspects, repairs, and replaces items associated with irrigation systems on a regular basis to ensure ample water is supplied to all grass, trees, and plants.

4. Ensures assigned grounds are kept free from trash and debris and trash cans outside of assigned buildings are emptied on a regular basis. Cleans and removes weeds and debris from all assigned hardscape areas including sidewalks, gathering areas, parking lots, etc. Ensures supplies, tools, equipment, and vehicles are properly secured and stored at the end of the work day.

5. Performs regular inspections on tables, benches, fencing, bleachers, etc. Cleans, repairs, replaces work or damaged items as required.

6. May be required to maintain and prepare athletic fields and grounds for practices, sporting events, and special events.

7. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the general principles and practices of employee supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of general landscaping principles, practices, and techniques, including those used in desert areas.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance, including the hazards and safety precautions associated with their use.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems and controls (pumps, piping, heads, computer controls, timers, etc.).
  • Knowledge of sports field markings and standards (AIA).

  • Skill in preparing reports of project costs, including estimates of materials, supplies, and labor.
  • Skill in supervising, training, and evaluating subordinate staff.
  • Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping work, including sprayers, irrigation controls, and mowers.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill in using personal computer and related software.

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with tribal employees and community members and other customers.
  • Ability to manage, supervise and evaluate personnel; able to gather, interprets and compiles reports.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to walk, stoop, climb, and bend.
  • Ability to work outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Ability to establish preventative maintenance programs for landscaping.
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and experience equivalent to three (3) years full time grounds and athletic fields operations and maintenance, at least one (1) year of which involved lead or supervisory responsibilities.

Equivalency - Any equivalent combination of training and experience that would enable the candidate to satisfactorily perform and meet the duties and responsibilities required may be considered in meeting the stated minimum qualifications.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License.
