Position Summary

The Sustainability Studies Program at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for a Lecturer at the rank of II or III depending on whether the candidate holds a terminal degree. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and academic life in the program and will have expertise in Sustainability Studies, with an emphasis on the social sustainability elements of the sustainability studies curriculum.

Candidates should be capable of teaching courses in the Sustainability Studies Program core curriculum, including Introduction to Sustainability, Environmental Justice Practicum, the Independent Sustainability Capstone, and topics courses in areas of the candidates expertise. Candidates must also be able to support development of internship opportunities, and to mentor students in independent studies.

We seek applicants with expertise in the field of social sustainability, broadly defined to include the formal and informal processes; systems; structures; and relationships that actively support the capacity of current and future generations to create healthy and livable communities.

The Sustainability Studies Program is housed within the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, which is a vibrant department whose faculty teach and research across the breadth of geography and environmental studies. We provide innovative curricular programs that are relevant to current, real-world problems, and that are strongly coupled with our individual research expertise. We enjoy a variety of collaborative partnerships with other units and scholars across campus. The Sustainability Studies Program provides innovative instruction for undergraduate students, and offers a minor degree to students from any major. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary, hands-on, community-engaged learning that informs students academic work, future careers, and personal lives. The university has a Carnegie Very High Research Activity (R1) designation, and has several research programs of interest to sustainability scholars. New Mexico has many public and private organizations that seek sustainable solutions to current environmental concerns.

Salary is competitive and based on experience. Applicants who are appointed to a UNM continuing faculty position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all graduate degree requirements prior to their initial appointment with UNM.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications: This position requires a minimum of a Masters degree in Sustainability Studies, Environmental Studies, or a relevant field, and the ability to join the UNM faculty in Fall 2021.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong applications will complement the strengths of the existing faculty and demonstrate evidence of: (1) PhD or other terminal degree in Sustainability Studies, Environmental Studies or a relevant field; (2) undergraduate teaching experience; (3) experience advising undergraduate students on independent projects, including capstone and internship projects; (4) ability to teach core courses in the Sustainability Studies curriculum (5) demonstrated contributions and commitment environmental, social, and/or economic sustainability and (6) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and student success as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
