PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
Provide legal advocacy on behalf of the women and children in shelter. Provide support and education for the women as they interact with legal institutions and complete legal activities required to ensure their safety and security while at De Colores and as they become independent.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to work with clients who have experienced domestic violence
Ability to work in an active environment
High School Diploma or GED and 3 years experience
Bachelors degree in a related field is preferred
Experience with the judicial system
Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) required
Must have current valid drivers license
Must have a Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card or be able to receive one within 60 days of employment
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES
- Provide lay legal advocacy support to the clients of De Colores
- Assists the clients to create a safety plan
- Assists the clients to create an individualized legal plan
- Directs and assists the clients as they pursue legal actions
- Provides translation services for the clients as they complete legal documents or attend court hearings
- Provide group sessions on legal topics as needed for the clients
- Complete required reports as required by funders and licensure
- Complete documentation for client files as required by funders and licensure
- Participates as an active member of De Colores staff team in the areas of program activities, staff and clinical meetings, planning and problem solving
- Community presentations as needed

CONTINUOUS EDUCATION
Employee will be expected to participate in continuous learning, competency building and maintenance of legal expertise and crisis intervention.

Work is performed in structured environment.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Reports to and is supervised directly by the Shelter Service Supervisor. Employee is accountable for understanding and complying with CPLC policies and procedures.
