POSITION SUMMARY


City of Bellaire


This position is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing library services for children and young adults. Stays informed of childrens and young adult issues and developments in the profession. Duties include assisting patrons using Library catalogs and databases, covering shifts on the circulation desk, and coordinating general library programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Plans, develops, implements, and promotes the children and young adult programs and activities
    1. Develops programs and services to encourage involvement in the use of library materials and facilities
    2. Keeps up-to-date with popular culture and technological advances and online platforms of interest to young adults
      • Current programs include story times, summer reading programs, school visits, special events in the city, and other programs that benefit children from birth to age 18
    3. Monitors use and oversee the maintenance of the childrens and young adult collections
      1. Select and order materials in a variety of formats within the allocated budget
      2. Evaluate collection for needs and clear the collection of unused and dated material
      3. Promotes the programs, collections, and services of the library by preparing publicity fliers, press releases, slide shows, bibliographies, displays, and bulletin boards
      4. Makes public presentations about the library and represents the library at community events.
      5. Uses in-depth knowledge of library resources and research methods to assist patrons in locating materials and information; provides reader advisory services
        1. Provides instruction and assistance to patrons in the use of library computers, software, databases, and equipment
        2. Provides library tours and bibliographic instruction to school groups and other organizations
        3. Proctors exams; registers patrons for library classes, and provides interlibrary loan services
        4. Addresses and facilitates the timely and effective resolution of complex patron issues
        5. Troubleshoots computer, printer, and PC reservation system problems
        6. Assists patrons at the circulation desk
          1. Charging and discharging materials
          2. Receiving and recording fines and fees
          3. Interview applicants for library cards and verify identification
          4. Rotation of front desk duties will include nights and Saturdays
          5. Assists in the supervision and training of work and study students, community service defendants, and volunteers
          6. Helps develop and implement library plans, policies, and procedures
          7. Rotates shift duties with the Library Director and the Assistant Library Director and acts as Librarian in charge in the absence of the Director

          REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

          • Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university
          • One (1) year of paid, full-time experience as a Youth Services Librarian
          • Training and experience using a personal computer with a variety of software, including Microsoft Office
          LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

          • Valid Drivers License
            1. Reliable transportation and liability insurance
            2. Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:
              • Criminal background check
              • Controlled substance screening
