Position Summary

General Summary/Purpose

The University of New Mexico Libraries Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections (CSWR) seeks qualified candidates for the position of AIOHC Project Library Info Specialist. The LIS will reorganize, update, reformat, complete the processing of the audio and transcription archives of the Native American oral history collection initiated and funded in the 1970s by Doris Duke. This is a 12 month, grant-funded, full-time appointment that is not renewable.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of CSWR, the Project Library Info Specialists duties include:

  • Oversee and perform integrated activities such as (re)organizing, describing, and reevaluating over 900 audio tapes and transcripts
  • Monitors and performs daily operations
  • Participates in planning and implementation of procedures and monitors procedures and workflow
  • Provides general problem-solving skills by surveying collection and developing a processing plan
  • With support of a student, implements and maintains productivity standards by verifying inventory, converting analog files into digital files, scanning analog papers and creating digital files
  • May supervise student employee, as appropriate
  • Update finding aid compliant with archival description and communication standards such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD); cleanup of xml-based files that have been transferred to ArchiveSpace
  • Create metadata of audio files and transcripts for upload into Mukurtu platform
  • Communicate with the grant-giving organization and other Doris Duke holding institutions about the projects progress
  • Coordinate creation of cataloging records with Technical Services unit
  • Identify conservation issues in collections and collaborate with Conservation and Preservation department to address these concerns as appropriate

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in library science
  • Experience processing manuscript and audio collections (including familiarity with archival metadata standards [EAD], archival content management issues [RMOA], and xml editor [Oxygen])
  • Experience working with an archival content management system such as ArchivesSpace
  • Familiarity with Describing: A Content Standard (DACS)
  • Familiarity or knowledge of Native American Histories and Cultures
