Job Description

ASU’s Knowledge Enterprise (KE) is seeking an experienced scientist to manage the day-to-day operations of the ASU’s Flow Cytometry Core Facility. In this position, the candidate will serve the highly diverse, multidisciplinary flow cytometry research needs of over 40 laboratories in 6 academic units at ASU. As such, the candidate will work with researchers to characterize, isolate, and purify a diverse set of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells from stem cells, primary tissue, cancer cells, cyanobacteria, algae, and yeast. Through management of the Core Facility, the candidate will significantly enhance the broad research capabilities at ASU in the areas of engineering (including biophysics, nanotechnology, biomaterials), synthetic biology (including biomanufacturing, genome engineering, biofuels), regenerative medicine (including tissue engineering, disease modeling, and drug discovery), cellular and molecular biology (including cell physiology, neuroscience, phylogenetics), and translational medicine (including neurodegeneration, infectious disease, immunology).​

Essential Duties

  • Independently operate and scheduled maintenance of BD FACS-Aria IIU and Life Technologies Attune NxT analyzer.
  • Perform multi-parameter flow cytometry for various cell phenotypes and assist in multi-parameter data analysis.
  • Provide training and guidance to core users regarding protocols, assay design, instrument operation, data analysis and interpretation.
  • Propose and investigate new cytometry-related technologies, reagents, and platforms based on literature review and research trends.
  • Order and maintain inventory of reagents, parts, and consumables.
  • Run quality-control checks and track instrument performance

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in the area of the scientific discipline and four (4) years of related experience which includes two (2) years laboratory management experience in a research setting; OR, Bachelor's degree in the area of the scientific discipline and six (6) years of related experience which includes two (2) years laboratory management experience in a research setting; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a MS or Ph.D in molecular biology, genetics, engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience with flow cytometry including design, acquisition, analysis and FACSsorting preferentially with BD FACSAria II. (5 years)
  • Experience with cytometry data analysis software (BD FACS Diva software, FlowJo).
  • Experience with magnetic cell separation systems for the isolation and purification of cells.
  • Working knowledge of aseptic mammalian cell culture and molecular biology techniques (i.e., qPCR, immunofluorescence, cloning).
  • Experience working within a collaborative team environment and present results in a clear, organized manner.​

Working Environment

  • Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks; to manage conflict; to interact in a team environment; and to communicate through verbal and written work.
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting and laboratory subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories such as lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed toe shoes, and respirator.
