Job Description

The School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership (SCETL) seeks a Senior level Marketing and Communication Manager to provide the high-level strategic communications and marketing for a multifaceted academic and public affairs program on the ASU Tempe campus.  

The Marketing and Communication Manager will work under the direction of the Assistant Director for SCETL, and closely with the events team, the Directors of the Graduate and Undergraduate Programs, and the Associate Director for Public Programing, to conceive and execute a marketing and communication strategy to promote the academic and public affairs programs that are integral to the School’s mission. 

The successful candidate will be a high-energy person who knows how to get things done with tact and composure. This person will understand the SCETL mission, and have the writing and technical skills necessary to creatively tell the SCETL story across web, social media, and email platforms. The successful candidate will work with, and supervise, the SCETL Communications Coordinator to effectively translate that mission to diverse constituencies.

Successful candidate is required to maintain a flexible work schedule in order to coordinate and attend evening and weekend events. Regular work schedule is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday.

 

Salary Range

$60,700 - $64,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

·        Manages marketing communications campaigns, projects, and initiatives to help build a national profile for SCETL as a resource for civic leadership and education.

·        Develops campaigns to support student enrollment, outreach, and recruitment.

·        Works with SCETL faculty and administration to promote The SCETL Advantage, major and minor course offerings, public programs, and resources, including summer programs for high school students, professional development opportunities for high school educators, and leadership seminars for university SCETL students. 

·        Promotes faculty as subject matter experts to K-12 schools and the broader community in accordance with the School’s mission to advance civic education at both the K-12 and university level.

·        Produces marketing communications materials and collaterals including, but not limited to, brochures, promotional announcements or flyers, print advertisements, and direct mail pieces, serving as chief copywriter and editor for these materials.

·        Coordinates with stakeholders while overseeing writing and production of electronic and hard copy newsletters and outreach vehicles.

·        Coordinates with stakeholders on the design, selection, and purchase of swag.

·        Manages print and radio advertising budgets and campaigns.

·        Develops marketing communications strategy, tactics, and key messages, and makes recommendations to best serve School needs, in coordination with stakeholders, including (but not limited to) the associate director for public programming, and the Directors of the Undergraduate and Graduate programs.

·        Oversees School website, identifying information needs and developing content to fill these, ensuring timely posting of news and events, and ensuring continuous improvement of the School’s e-strategies.

·        Supervises outside vendors such as graphic design firms, printers, etc. relevant to ongoing marketing communications projects and monitoring use of brand and graphic standards. 

·        Works within defined budget parameters and assists in the annual budgeting process.

·        Presents information about the School to visitors using a variety of presentation formats, including oral presentations/tours.

·        In coordination with the SCETL Director, and media relations management, develops and distributes local, regional, and national media releases and pitches story ideas.

·        Supports and responds to the ASU President’s Office initiative to employ Washington, D.C. - based public relations firm charged with establishing partnerships and opportunities for SCETL at a national level.

·        Supervise Communications Program Coordinator and student workers.

·        Complete other duties, as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or closely related field AND five (5) years of experience in a public relations/marketing role; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

 

Desired Qualifications

·        Evidence of a Master’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Political Science or closely related field.

·        Experience or interest in the intersection between government policy and education, liberal arts education, civic education, and public affairs.

·        Evidence of working with an interdisciplinary team of communication, marketing, and technology professionals leading strategic communications and digital marketing.

·        Experience in social media content creation and social technology administration.

·        Experience in web design.

·        Experience in developing strategic communications for a multi-channel environment. 

·        Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of media relations programs, particularly in an academic environment.

·        Demonstrated Knowledge of the principles of marketing and public relations.

·        Demonstrated knowledge of publication format and editorial practices, including writing for print, broadcast, and electronic mediums.

·        Experience using online-design programs to create/edit event promotional materials and campaigns, as needed.

·        Demonstrated knowledge of the Teamwork project management system.

·        Demonstrated knowledge of the Salesforce marketing and communication system

·        Ability to comprehend and accurately communicate complex subject matter to various constituencies and the general public.

·        Experience in analyzing, foreseeing, and developing effective solutions for logistical problems.

·        Experience in managing and prioritizing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment.

·        Evidence of effective written, verbal, and social media communication skills 

·        Experience supervising and directing the work of others

 

Working Environment

Most activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.
