This Is What You Will Do (Position Summary)

At Webster Bank, our financial intermediation activities are organized broadly around three distinct lines of business: the Consumer Bank, the Commercial Bank, and HSA Bank.

This position will be aligned with the Commercial Bank.

Commercial Banking delivers solutions to a wide range of companies, investors, government entities, and other public and private institutions. We help our clients achieve their business and financial goals through our deep expertise in Commercial & Institutional Lending, Commercial Real Estate, Capital Markets, Capital Finance and Treasury Management. Our Wealth Management team pairs holistic wealth solutions, including tailored lending, with commercial banking services, helping our clients achieve their financial goals.

The Managing Director, Underwriting and Portfolio Management Team Lead will lead and contribute to a team that supports the Not-For-Profit, Law Firm Banking, and Regional Banking divisions. The group partners with relationship managers to support (i) underwriting commercial loans for not-for-profit and for-profit businesses and (ii) the ongoing portfolio management of existing lending relationships. The position will be a player/coach and will oversee the day-to-day managerial duties of the centralized UW/ PM team as well as execute and manage transactions.

Responsibilities will include account level executing steps such as conducting underwriting due diligence, financial analysis of borrowers and guarantors, preparation of internal credit memos, monitoring covenant compliance, risk ratings and credit quality of the portfolio, as well as managerial responsibilities, including prioritizing and coordinating the activities of the division, supporting the completion of underwriting credit approval memos and periodic memos, and ensuring the team completes timely and accurate updates of clients financial data in Webster Banks credit systems of record.

You Will Be Responsible For (Major Duties and Responsibilities)

Underwriting

  • Prioritize, direct, and coordinate the activities of the division to ensure exceptional and efficient credit execution.
  • Lead underwriting due diligence, partner with relationship managers, draft and help team produce high-quality credit approval documents. Documents will thoroughly review operating performance to plan and prior year, assess current and expected financial condition, identify and analyze all risks and mitigating factors, identify variances to policy/procedures and assign accurate risk rating with appropriate justifications.
  • Interface with clients and other stakeholders to facilitate underwriting process.
  • Detail debt financings and company financials utilizing Excel and Websters credit management platform, Sageworks.
  • Support credit approval discussions.
  • Oversee the teams loan documentation and closing process.

Portfolio Management

  • Review, spread, and maintain periodic financial statements, compliance certificates and borrowing base reports.
  • Engage with borrowers' CFOs (or similar position) to get qualitative updates on performance.
  • Ensure the team completes renewals, annual reviews, and interim analyses on a timely basis.
  • Present internal portfolio review memos to senior credit executives at periodic meetings.
  • Monitor the portfolio's risk grades and ensure high risk credits are tracked with the required quarterly problem asset reports.
  • Ensure the timely completion and effective use of ticklers, covenants, document library, and other ancillary items maintained in Websters credit system of record.
  • Meet Credit Risk Review, Audit and OCC requirements for acceptable reviews.
  • Execute all amendments/waivers for existing borrowers.

You Will Need To Have (EDUCATION, EXERIENCE & SKILLS)

  • Education: Bachelors degree; courses in accounting and finance field preferred.
  • Experience: 10+ years of prior professional experience or equivalent; professional experience in commercial banking underwriting and/or portfolio management related position is preferred.
  • Excellent analytic skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong competency in Microsoft Office suite - including Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to interface with relationship managers, portfolio managers, credit officers, clients, and senior management.
  • Locations: Connecticut: Stamford; New York: Manhattan, White Plains, Jericho; New Jersey: Paramus; Option for hybrid schedule if deemed appropriate.

The estimated salary range for this position is $160,000 USD to $180,000 USD. Actual salary may vary up or down depending on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition, this position is eligible for incentive compensation.
