The mission of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Department is to encourage active lifestyles and create healthy environments for people, nature and community.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Marketing Specialist provides marketing support for the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department by promoting the positive work of the Department through advertising, social media, special events, sponsorship sales and other communication efforts.

  • This position reports to the Superintendent of Marketing & Special Events and supports a diverse system of parks, natural areas, trails, recreation facilities and programs through marketing and sponsorship development.
  • Performs professional public/media relations, marketing and sponsorship sales duties for Aurora's Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department.
  • Creates, edits, submits for approval and disseminates visually compelling and well-written communications materials across channels including marketing/advertising; news releases/advisories; e-mail newsletters to patrons; event calendars; multi-page publications to enhance the image of the city of Aurora.
  • Serves as professional liaison and establishes communications with local, national, and trade news media, responds to media inquiries, handles sensitive situations with the media that impact city image; plans, coordinates and implements, special events, grand openings, tradeshow booths and other promotional activities.
  • Solicits and coordinates sponsorships, leads advertising and promotional initiatives that drive revenue for recreation centers, sports programs, golf courses and more.
  • Assists in the administration of the department social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This includes but is not limited to a daily posting schedule, meeting or exceeding organic reach and engagement measures along with answering comments and messages from the community in a timely manner
  • Assists with the maintenance and continued evolution of the departments near 120 pages of the city website. This includes but is not limited to consistently updating information, assistance with design and quality control. Also any needs related to the website with regards to special events as well.
  • Creates and/or manages print and online campaigns that build the brand and help drive revenue and donations; ensures brand standards are maintained across all channels and markets.
  • Assists with tasks related to the quarterly publication of the Aurora Recreation Guide including editing, cost management and meeting a strict schedule for completion of each edition.
  • Conducts media-buys to support the city's special events and revenue-driven programs.
  • Represents the department through participation in community outreach such as various organizations, committees and intergovernmental activities.
  • Manages various workflow processes and performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Weekend and holiday work will be required.
  • Additional assigned tasks will support the PROS mission statement; encouraging active lifestyles and creating healthy environments for people, nature and community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in marketing, sales, communications, public relations, or a directly related field.

Experience:
  • At least 2 years progressively responsible marketing experience, including experience in creating a comprehensive marketing strategy. (3years preferred)
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of social media marketing is required.
  • Experience in a public sector/government environment preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public/media relations, promotion and marketing; photography, personal computers, related hardware, and related software application packages; knowledge of graphic design, design programs, and printing process.

Abilities:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, citizens, sponsors, media; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; plan, organize, and implement special events; handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy.

Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated capabilities in public relations, marketing, sales, communications, and presentation skills. Strong skills in using computer and related software to successfully complete job's function.


LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
  • Colorado Driving License with good driving history.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands:

  • Sedentary physical work; may require ability to lift up to a maximum of 30 pounds; some standing and walking; may require some bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing; hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard; vision to read reports and other written material; frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees, volunteers, citizens, and media.
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel

Work Environment:
  • Works primarily in clean, comfortable indoor environment; may require some outdoor work with exposure to dust and noise.

Equipment Used:
  • Personal computer and related hardware.
