MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the technical supervision of a pathologist, Technical Supervisor and administrative supervision of the Administrative Laboratory Director, performs a wide variety of routine and specialized studies on blood, urine and body fluids samples as requisitioned by a physician, to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, following established standards and practices. Independent judgment, professional education and certification are required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • May be assigned to a specific department in the lab or may rotate in a minimum of two or a maximum of all departments
  • Comply with established standards and practices/procedures. Ensure timely completion of assigned tasks in conformance with established policies and standards
  • Follows established protocols for quality control procedures to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents and procedures.
  • Recognize instrument malfunction and out-of-control test results and take corrective action.
  • Make sure specimens are properly labeled, collected, received and stored properly for future reference and then properly discarded.
  • Adhere to all established Laboratory policies and procedures
  • Complete proficiency and competency checks as well as read and sign new and revised policies and procedures in a timely manner.
  • Assemble supplies and equipment and assure proper functioning and cleanliness of equipment and work area

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Education: Minimum Education: Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory technology from an accredited institution or a high school graduate or equivalent with successful completion of an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician)
  2. Experience (Type & Length):1-3 years preferred. Successful rotation through all clinical laboratory departments or its equivalent. Requires three months clinical training and on the job training to become familiar with the hospitals policy and procedures and to become proficient in all phases of the job requirements
  3. Certification/Licensure: ASCP or other acceptable Certification agency preferred

Lab Quality Specialist / Lead Tech

Job Summary

Quality Specialist/Lead Tech leads and coordinates daily operation and functions in any or all divisions of the clinical laboratory. Provides assistance to the Core Lab Section Head in the day-to-day operations of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Laboratory Supervisor, Chief of Pathology or Core Lab Section Head the Quality Specialist/Lead Tech is responsible for:

  • Assuring compliance by department personnel with professional and departmental standards, policies and procedures, and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies
  • Responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Responsible for assuring all remedial actions are taken whenever a test system deviates from the laboratorys established performance specifications.
  • Responsible for ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
  • Processes specimens appropriately, meeting specimen testing requirements consistently, and aliquoting specimens accurately
  • Reports results in a timely manner. Consistently and appropriately prioritizes STAT specimens
  • Checks pending lists according to laboratory policy and resolves all issues. Resolution is documented appropriately and communicated to the next shift. Makes oneself available to receive shift report from the previous shift
  • Verifies, calls, and documents all critical values according to hospital policy.
  • Performs and documents all scheduled daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance.
  • Performs specimen processing at accessioning bench as required Responsible for maintaining a high level of inspection readiness, including personnel qualification, training and competency, oversight of proficiency testing program and test methodology studies including linearities, correlations, calibrations, and validations.
  • *Reviews Quality Control results for completeness and accuracy, and documents resolutions for out-of-control tests.
  • Records, reviews, certifies, and reports test results as required
  • Verifies, calls, and documents all critical values according to hospital policy
  • Establishes service priorities, work routine and flow patterns and monitor workflow to assure prompt and efficient delivery of services.
  • Assists with staff review, education and sign off of new and revised policies and procedures.
  • Effects cost control measures in the utilization of personnel, supplies, materials, equipment, etc.
  • Assists in the hiring and training process of new laboratory personnel.
  • Integrates students and assigns them to departments as determined by curriculum and clinical experience requirements.
  • Maintains proper functioning of laboratory equipment, calls for and documents maintenance and repairs defective equipment, purchases laboratory supplies to maintain adequate inventory.
  • Attends meetings (administrative, departmental, divisional, and operational) as required. Participates on committees as required / requested
  • Assumes responsibility for oversight of the laboratory in absence of the Core Lab Section Head.
  • Perform other duties as requested/required

  • Must be able to plan, organize and prioritize work duties to accomplish daily objectives.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  1. Minimum Education: Bachelors Degree in chemical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology AND have at least 2 years laboratory training or experience, or both.
  2. Experience (Type & Length): 5 years of supervisory/charge laboratory experience preferred. Management experience preferred.
  3. Certification/Licensure: ASCP certification preferred
