Job Description

SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant I provides excellent patient experience and medical care in accordance with MPHC guiding principles under the direction of the provider for medical care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Maintains CLIA-waived testing log (s) and ensures compliance with all checking and documentation of CLIA waived testing and sterilization equipment
  2. Handles sterile and dirty instruments used in the departments according to instrument processing procedures.
  3. Keeps exam rooms/procedure rooms stocked/set up according to departmental guidelines.
  4. Maintains, cleans and calibrates medical equipment to meet quality assurance and infection control guidelines (logs). Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor; takes equipment out of service.
  5. Documents chief complaint, takes and records vital signs and completes history questions per procedure.
  6. Uses proper charting procedure, i.e., noting date, time signature and job title.
  7. Plots growth grids in pediatrics.
  8. Manages telephone messages from their assigned to pods daily.
  9. Call patients that are no show for appointment and scheduled them in the appropriate timeframe per department.
  10. Records and documents all injections and/or immunizations given, including lot #, location and initials orders in accordance with procedure.
  11. Manages EHR tasks for their assigned care team daily. This includes Labs/DIs, TEs, Documents, actions and consult pending.
  12. Completes chart prep for assigned provider daily to include review of ASIIS and enter in EHR as appropriate.
  13. Utilize and/or schedule interpreter services as needed by the patient.
  14. Must be able to embrace differences among people and able to interact with internal staff as well as external contacts in a culturally competent and respectful manner.
  15. Checks immunizations and supplies for expired items
  16. Restocks sterilization area and other shared areas with supplies including but not limited to urine cups, needles, gauze, band aids.
  17. Ensure biohazard and sharps containers are properly disposed of or emptied.
  18. Check fax outbox to ensure there are no failed faxes for assigned provider.
  19. Completes daily accountability board
  20. Must be able to adapt to working with different providers teams when needed for coverage
  21. Attends meetings and huddles as scheduled by the department.
  22. Participates in preparing department for internal and external site audits.
  23. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/SKILLS
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program diploma or certification of completion

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  4. Cleans patient care areas in accordance with infection control procedures.
  5. Keeps exam rooms/procedure rooms stocked/set up according to departmental guidelines.
  6. Performs quality controls and routine cleaning on medical equipment to meet quality assurance and infection control guidelines (logs). Identifies equipment needing maintenance. Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor; removes equipment out of patient care areas, if possible, for repair.
  7. Obtains and documents chief complaint, vital signs and medical and social histories per procedure.
  8. Facilitates the completion of questionnaires, as needed.
  9. Uses proper charting procedure, i.e., noting date, time signature and job title.
  10. Plots growth grids in pediatrics.
  11. Manages telephone messages from their assigned to pods daily.
  12. Call patients that are no show for appointment and scheduled them in the appropriate timeframe per department.
  13. Verifies, administers, and documents all medications and/or immunizations given, including lot #, location and initials, in accordance with procedure.
  14. Manages EHR tasks for their assigned care team daily. This includes Labs/DIs, TEs, Documents, Actions and Consult Pending.
  15. Completes chart prep for assigned provider daily to include the review of any outstanding care items and review ASIIS, as appropriate; make updates to EMR as needed
  16. Utilize and/or schedule interpreter services as needed by the patient.
  17. Must be able to embrace differences among people and able to interact with internal staff as well as external contacts in a culturally competent and respectful manner.
  18. Checks immunizations and supplies for expired items

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/SKILLS

Electronic Health Record experience

Recent back office medical assistant experience (within last 24 months) or recent graduate of MA program/certification.
