Position Grade 13
Position Summary

Under limited supervision, manages all aspects of the integrated facility operations and services of the UNM Biology Animal Research Facility, which may involve several different sites and locations. The Mgr. will oversee the supervision of a large, multi-trades workforce engaged in activities associated with the operations, maintenance, and housekeeping of the Animal Research Facility and its sites. Plans, oversees, and coordinates the implementation of construction and capital improvement projects, and directly participates in overall Animal Research Facilities planning for the component.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Project management skills
Project planning skills
Knowledge of budgeting, cost estimating, and fiscal management principles and procedures
Knowledge of the proper installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of animal research equipment
Ability to administer medications and treatments to laboratory animals according to prescribed protocol
Supervisory experience
Ability to perform surgical procedures on animals according to research protocols
Ability to extract, collect, and process animal tissues and blood samples
Ability to respond as needed on an on-call 24/7 basis

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 10 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher
Wildlife field experience
Experience working with animals, both wild and lab
Knowledge of institutional animal care and use policies
Knowledge of the operations and duties of IACUC
Ability to teach small animal surgery or research methods
Experience working in a university scientific research environment
Experience working with NIH or other federal granting agencies
Experience working with USDA
Experience with federal regulations on animal research or grant funding
Grant writing and submission experience
Ability to achieve LATG certification within 12 months of employment
