Position Summary

Provides health care services applying imaging techniques to assist in diagnosis or treatment. Performs imaging procedures and related techniques, producing images for the interpretation by; or at the request of a licensed practitioner. Contributes to the efficient operation of the department, ensuring the quality and continuity of patient care including variation of modality assignment to meet the needs of the patient volume.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the orientation and training of new employees in the proper use of equipment according to department protocol.
  • Demonstrate proper departmental protocol when transferring a patient to a stretcher with concern for patient comfort and safety during positioning
  • Verify the appropriate patient and procedure to be performed by checking the physicians orders and contact the appropriate physician/personnel if there are any discrepancies. Obtains, documents accurately and relays pertinent clinical/demographic information to alleviate delays and errors ensuring proper procedure is always performed and contacts appropriate physician/personnel if there are any discrepancies
  • Perform all necessary computer operations to ensure proper procedure documentation
  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt the procedure to the patients physical and mental condition, regularly concentrates on the effective completion of the procedure with attention to technical adjustments in patient positioning and imaging with an overall response to patient care needs
  • Demonstrates a willingness and ability to assist others as requested, regularly assists in other areas of the department such as: receptionist duties, clerical responsibilities, and other assignments as requested; always uses time for departmental advantage including variation of modality assignment to meet the needs of the patient volume.
  • Has demonstrated a working knowledge of the principles of physics, anatomy, medical terminology, sterile technique, I.V. administration, sterile technique prepartation, and radiation protection, as required for performance of technical duties
  • Responds rapidly and effectively to emergency situations, demonstrating ability to manage self, patients, and others.
  • Observes patient and equipment during procedures and reports any unusual occurrences: always informs nursing personnel of any changes in patients condition.
  • Ensure operation of imaging equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements and required quality assurance procedures; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling appropriate vendors for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Always demonstrates an awareness of radiation safety procedures for self and others; utilizes lead protective devices including aprons and shields and remains behind protective enclosures, when appropriate, during exposures; minimizes radiation exposure to patient and self by demonstrating a high degree of accuracy. Has a good knowledge of hospitals radiation protection policies and R.S.O. delegation. Demonstrates visible evidence of radiation protection including visible collimation, shielding, and documentation of last menstrual cycle
  • Assists in the designing, implementing, and maintaining of systems in order to support procurement and control of supplies and equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains par levels, assists with inventory control, assumes responsibility for utilization and conservation of resources.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; following drug protocols in case of reactions to drugs, such as contrast media, administering first aid, and using the emergency cart.

Education/Experience/Licensure/Technical/Other:

  1. Education: Associate required, Bachelor in Science Degree prefered in designated Imaging Modalities
  2. Experience (Type & Length): One to three years related years experience required
  3. Certification/Licensure: Certification by ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) in designated imaging modalities. Licensure by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in designated imaging modalities: A combination of any two or more of the following:
    1. Certification by ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) in Radiography. Licensure by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Radiography
    2. Certificaiton by ARRT(American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) in Mammography. Licencsure by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Mammography
    3. Certification by ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) in Computerized Tomography by ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
    4. Certification by ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) in Sonography
    5. Certification by ARRT(American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or NMTCB (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board) in Nuclear Medicine. Licensure by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Nuclear Medicine. For technologists performing SPECT-CT: Current Massachusetts DPH Radiologic Technologist Nuclear Medicine license SPECT-CT endorsement and/or credentials stating a modified certification course for SPECT-CT has been completed and/or Current ARRT certification with Radiology (R) designation.
      1. Software/Hardware: Documentation in an electronic medical record, Radiology PACS, Cardilogy PACS (Nuclear Medicine Technologist)
