Job Description
Job Title: Music Minister Status: Full-Time
Exemption Status: Non-exempt Salary Grade: 20
Department/Location: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish / Florence, AZ
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Pastor is responsible for coordinating the weekly liturgical music program for Sunday and liturgical celebrations. The employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, "Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received." (Eph. 4:1)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of this Ministerial Position:
  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the School by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The employee may not espouse, in word or deed, any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith community and being open to the importance of a personal faith journey; strive to model the teaching of Jesus by attitude and example.
  • With the approval of the pastor develop the liturgical music program for the parish including the formation of a choir and musical groups as necessary for liturgical celebrations.
  • Ensure that all liturgical musicians and choir members are well-versed in the liturgy of the Church and the propriety of their duties including an understanding of the rubrics of the Church.
  • Ensure that musicians and choir members are aware of Church protocol including maintaining an environment of respect and solemnity at all liturgical celebrations.
  • Meet on a regular basis and maintain open communications with volunteer musicians and provide training as necessary.
  • Recruit and form musicians and choir members as necessary
  • Develop and manage a budget including as necessary, supplies, mailings, and song and music books for the music ministry.
  • Foster communication and work collaboratively with office staff.
  • Answer and handle incoming telephone calls in a professional and courteous manner; Distribute mail daily; perform mailings as necessary.
  • Prioritize, coordinate, and schedule calendar requests; maintain and ensure accuracy of the calendar.
  • Update and maintain parish records including sacramental records.
  • Aid and provide administrative support as necessary to include typing of correspondence and other documents.
  • Attend to the needs of visitors to the parish; keep reception room and office and kitchen area in good order.
  • Provide support to parish personnel as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal music and office environment.
Required Activities: Walking; sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; handling, hearing; carrying; and keyboarding.
Basic Qualifications:
  • A working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Roman Catholic Church. If a baptized Catholic, must be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Employ flexibility and follow direction; be a team player and be self-motivated.
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work with a sense of urgency.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parishioners, and the general public
  • Research and retrieve information from the internet.
  • Computer skills to include word-processing and spreadsheet preparation; Minimum typing skills of 50 WPM.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to successfully pass a background and criminal history check.
  • Clean and neat personal appearance
Education and Experience:
  • A bachelors degree or equivalent experience in music
  • Experience with Catholic liturgical music
  • Level I of the Diocesan Ministry Certification with renewal every three years
Other/Preferred Skills:
  • Bi-Lingual (Spanish/English)
