    DEFINITION: Under limited supervision, the Native American Education Coordinator will work closely with Native American students to advocate, support, and communicate students' needs within the district/schools. The coordinator will promote and implement strategies to ensure the academic success of Native American students. The coordinator will support inclusive practices for promoting family engagement within the district and schools while also communicating to families and students the services/offerings available through the district and the community. The coordinator will also coordinate, monitor, and supervise the activities and personnel which support the efforts to educate Native American children.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    TASKS:
    • Serves as the District liaison and promotes positive relationships and fosters improved communication across schools, administrators, and educators with Native American families, tribal community leaders, and community partners.
    • Plans, informs, and/or facilitates Native American family engagement in District-wide activities through collaborative work with the tribal community leaders and/or tribal parent committee(s).
    • Serve as a resource and representative of Native American interests in various District committees and task forces; collaborate with Native American Parent Committee (NAPC) officers, parent committee meetings and workshops.
    • Participates in developing goals and objectives of the Native American Education Program; develops procedures, strategies and evaluations related to implementing Program goals and objectives including standard methods/forms for data collection and record keeping; provides monthly reports to NAPC and District C&I team.
    • Meets regularly with Native American students to review, support, and plan for students' individual academic progress/success; provide staff with the necessary data metrics for targeting support for students with the greatest needs, establish and monitor follow-up plans.
    • Provides on-going research and guidance to students regarding post-secondary options including application and scholarship opportunities.
    • Meets regularly with administration, school teams and families to work together to improve academic success, school attendance, and social emotional needs of Native American students and maintains open and ongoing communication.
    • Plans, develops and implements inservices, staff meetings, orientation and other resources for administrators and teachers; and establishes scheduled communications to include followup plans.
    • Monitors the goals and objectives of Federal contracts and Federal programs; prepares budgets with NAPC for Federal funds including: JOM, Title IX, and Impact Aide; submits grants, completes applications, and manages the budget of the Native American Education Program.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
    Knowledge of District and Department policies and procedures.
    Knowledge of local tribes.
    Knowledge of budget management for Federal and State education programs.
    Knowledge or grant writing requirements.
    Knowledge of Tucson and tribal social agencies and services.
    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and providing supervision where indicated.
    Skill in utilizing a variety of programs for data tracking, communications, reporting, etc.
    Skill in working with Native American parents/community on educational issues and concerns.
    Skill in coordinating federal and state education projects or programs.
    Skill in preparing financial budgets and financial reports for funding agencies.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Bachelors degree in Education, Native American Studies, Public Administration, or related field.
    Two (2) years of experience in social work, mental health, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
    Native American descent preferred.

    Depending on the needs of the District, some incumbents in this class must be able to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.
