Job Description

Essential Duties

  • Medical management of research participants enrolled in IRB approved studies including; oversight of screening of new participants who are candidates for protocols, assessment of acute and non-acute clinical problems and toxicity's, taking histories and physical examinations, interpreting data obtained from diagnostic tests and laboratory studies, ordering the appropriate follow-up care and providing patient and staff education. 
  • Data collection, analysis, monitoring, case management of protocol participants. Supervise employees engaged in clinical research studies requiring medical interventions. 
  • Actively supports efforts of the Affinity Networks and Translational Teams to develop and design innovative approaches to clinical and community research in a non-medical center environment.
  • May perform the following invasive procedures independently, as part of an approved research protocol, upon the completion of certification by the Medical Director; phlebotomy and IV line insertion including retrograde line insertion, blood collection through peripheral or central venous catheter (PICC or CVC lines), tissue biopsy for research purposes, arterial blood gas, skin punch biopsy, oversight of research infusion studies including drug administration. Evaluates and interprets findings.
  • Medical oversight and participant screening for exercise testing following the guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine. 
  • Development and documentation of written or electronic study notes.
  • Participation in study meetings, providing medical related protocol and documentation development and innovations in patient care to promote state of the art research protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate or Bachelor’s degree with a major in Nursing from a State Board of Nursing approved school of nursing with satisfactory completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program AND currently licensed to practice nursing in the State of Arizona AND certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the State Board of Nursing. Effective January 1, 2001, The State Board of Nursing requires a minimum qualification of a Master’s degree in a health-related area and after November 13,2005 minimum qualification of a Master’s degree in Nursing. A registered Nurse Practitioner who is Board Certified before January 1, 2001 and in good standing with a current license to practice shall continue to meet the minimum qualifications. Maintains a valid AZ driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working on research projects; experience with working at ASU
  • Evidence of a Master’s Degree in Nursing; certificate in clinical research
  • Two (2) years of clinical research experience, in particular providing medical assessments and oversight, preferably at ASU
  • Experience and training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Experience working with students

  • Use of software and computer equipment (monitor, keyboard, mouse) for extended periods of time
  • Use critical thinking to make decisions and/or analyze and report data/results of tests conducted
  • Use an ASU or personal vehicle to travel to different campuses
  • Conduct lab tests using appropriate equipment and protocols
  • Use lab equipment
  • Must be prepared to work in an environment where appropriate protections are in place for COVID.
  • The incumbent will must also be able to travel to different sites to provide medical support (eg HFC, Wexford, ABC, Coor).
