Position Summary

The Department of Linguistics at the University of New Mexico announces a search for a one-year Visiting Lecturer position in the Navajo Language Program beginning in the Fall semester of the 2025-2026 academic year. We seek an experienced Navajo language instructor to teach both face-to-face and online Introductory Navajo language courses while working collaboratively with our program faculty to develop more advanced Navajo language courses.

UNM is the states flagship research university as well as a Hispanic-Serving Institution classified as a Carnegie Research University with Highest Research Activity. UNM also has strong connections with 23 tribal nations located within New Mexico. As such, successful candidates must be committed to working with broadly diverse student and community populations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. B.A. in Din Studies, Education, Native American Studies, Linguistics or a related field.
  2. Three years or more experience teaching Navajo in post-secondary settings as evidenced through the CV.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Five years or more experience teaching Navajo language courses as evidenced through the submitted CV, cover letter and/or teaching statement.
  2. Experience and/or training in developing and teaching online courses and working with Learning Management Systems, as evidenced through the submitted CV, cover letter and/or teaching statement.
  3. Experience incorporating Navajo culture into Navajo language pedagogy as evidenced through the submitted CV, cover letter and/or teaching statement.
  4. Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues as evidenced through the cover letter and/or teaching statement.
  5. A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding ofthe rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of theuniversity's mission to serve local and global communities as evidenced throughthe submitted CV, cover letter and/or teaching statement.
