Position Summary

The University of New Mexico's Animal Resource Facility is seeking a licensed Laboratory Animal Veterinarian at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level (dependent on experience) beginning in on or about July 1, 2021. The Director, Animal Resource Facility (ARF) reports to the Vice Chancellor of Research for the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (UNM HSC) and serves as the University Attending Veterinarian in accordance with the USDA Animal Welfare Regulations and the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. UNM has a breadth of research activities that include biomedical, behavioral and wildlife science. As University Attending Veterinarian, this position has responsibility for the health and welfare of all UNM animals involved in research, teaching, or testing in both the centralized and decentralized animal care programs as well as the New Mexico Veterans Administration Health Care Systems. This position also carries a open track faculty appointment within the School of Medicine with some opportunity for Graduate Medical Education teaching.

At times, it is necessary for this individual to work nights/weekends.

At times, this individual will be required to work with animals involving studies with hazardous agents, resulting in potential occupational risks of chemical, biological and radiological safety hazards.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The position is open to veterinarians with degrees that include DVM, VMD, or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Applicants must hold an active state veterinary medical licensure
  • A minimum of 6 years of laboratory animal or comparative veterinary medicine experience is required.
  • Board eligible for American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) certification.
  • Experience supporting animal care under ABSL-3 research programs
  • Eligible to obtain DOJ clearance for unescorted access to facilities with Select Agents
  • Eligible to acquire DEA license for controlled substances
  • Applicants must be US citizens or permanent resident

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ACLAM Board Certified
  • Direct experience and/or deep familiarity with the AAALAC accreditation process
  • Experience with personnel leadership and administration of laboratory animal resource shared service centers in compliance with OMB Circular A-21
  • Knowledge and experience with laboratory animal facility design and equipment specifications and with applications for extramural animal research proposals.
  • Experience with laboratory Animal Crisis Planning
  • Quality of authored publications and teaching/training experience
  • Active or eligible to seek Active NM state veterinary medical licensure
