Position Summary

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is conducting a search to hire a diverse cohort of outstanding faculty in the areas of theoretical quantum information science, quantum computing algorithms and applications, experimental quantum optics/AMO quantum physics, and experimental quantum materials and systems. The positions are open rank, with initial appointments commensurate with experience and qualifications. Successful candidates will become members of academic departments in the School of Engineering and/or College of Arts and Sciences, including, but not limited to, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics & Astronomy. Candidates will also have the opportunity to affiliate with some of UNMs world-class research centers including the Center for Quantum Information and Control (CQuIC), the Center for High Technology Materials (CHTM), and the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC). Successful candidates will help to grow the interdisciplinary program in Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) across the university and participate in the newly launched Quantum New Mexico (QNM) initiative. QNM has been established as a partnership between with the University of New Mexico and Sandia National Laboratories, with opportunities to grow collaborative research and education with other national laboratories and universities across the state of New Mexico.

These positions are for tenured and tenure-track faculty in the School of Engineering and/or College of Arts and Sciences. Tenured and tenure-track faculty in the school/college are fully funded academic year (9 month) positions.

We invite applications for tenure and tenure-track faculty in the following focus areas.

Theoretical Quantum Information Science (QIS) with primary areas of interest, including: quantum information theory; the interface of quantum information and fundamental physics such as condensed matter and high energy physics; quantum computer science and algorithms; the interface of quantum information and quantum chemistry; quantum simulation and many-body physics; quantum control and open quantum systems; quantum error correction; and quantum benchmarking and validation. Other topics of interest include quantum simulation; quantum complexity theory; application of QIS to problems in optimization and statistical machine learning; quantum architecture and software co-design; and mathematical foundations of QIS.

Experimental Quantum Optics/AMO Quantum Physics with primary areas of interest at the intersection of quantum optics, atomic & molecular physics, and quantum information. Topics of interest include: fundamental physics of quantum optics and AMO systems; photonic and atomic quantum sensing and metrology; quantum computing and quantum information; quantum communication and quantum networking; quantum memory/repeater architectures; and quantum simulators.

Experimental quantum materials and systems with primary areas of interest including: photonics-based quantum science and technology; experimental photonics-based system-level quantum computing and communications. Candidates working in areas including quantum materials; quantum sensors; advanced spectroscopy and microscopy; and applications to biophysics, physics, engineering, or medical fields are strongly encouraged to apply.
