Position Summary

The Department of Radiology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is seeking applicants for a full-time clinical medical physicist to serve in a faculty position of Open Rank Lecturer. Candidates must have obtained an M.S in Engineering, Physics or Medical Physics and be American Board of Radiology certified in diagnostic radiological physics by the contract start date.

As a member of our Medical Physics team, the successful incumbent will provide clinical medical physics services for the department of Radiology of the Health Sciences Center. The faculty will participate in acceptance, annual, and routine quality assurance testing of imaging equipment located at a variety of sites throughout the health system; and will assist in teaching diagnostic radiology residents, medical students, medical physics students, and undergraduate and graduate courses in the Radiological Sciences and Medical Physics programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs acceptance, annual, and routine quality assurance testing on imaging equipment as required.

  • Teaches diagnostic radiology physics to residents, medical students, medical physics students, and provides lectures in the Radiological Science Program and other courses as required.

  • Advises and consults with physicians and technologists in activities that insure and improve the image quality and reduce patient doses in diagnostic radiology.

  • Participates in the radiation safety program at the UNM Health System and on the UNM campus. Consults with external physicians and patients regarding radiation exposure and safety, as requested.

  • Participate in the selection and/or recommendation of new imaging equipment to be purchased by UNMH.

  • Maintains professional contact with peers through attendance at professional meetings and related activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports.

  • Ability to supervise and train residents, to include organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to provide technical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in areas of expertise.

  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide rand of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of current diagnostic radiology principles, methods, procedures and techniques.

  • Advanced knowledge of radiation safety principles, methods and procedures.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines and standards for the provision of diagnostic medical physics.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Engineering, Physics or Medical Physics from an accredited college or university
  • American Board of Radiology certified in diagnostic radiological physics
  • Minimum 3 years working as a medical physicist in an academic medical center or hospital-based system

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience at an academic medical center

  • Leadership experience in medical physics
