This is a non-tenure-track, faculty position for up to two years, with the opportunity for renewal and continued funding via external funding mechanisms. The position will be based at CASAA which is located off campus.

CASAA investigators, affiliated with the Departments of Psychology, Sociology, Communication and Journalism, Economics, and Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences are leaders nationally in 12-step research; research on Motivational Interviewing and the Community Reinforcement Approach; family-involved treatment models; training and dissemination research; development of instruments; studies of mechanisms of change; clinical research in special populations, particularly adolescents, women, Hispanics, American Indians, and criminal justice populations; research on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; and research on methods to reduce harm from risky drinking.

CASAA is the home for the UNM Campus Office of Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP). CASAA has long-standing relationships with a number of community-based treatment programs that are available as sites for clinical trials. The relationships between CASAA and these treatment facilities are on-going and reciprocal, and CASAA is widely regarded as a key resource for the development and testing of empirically supported treatments for alcohol and other substance use disorders. In addition, CASAA has uniquely strong relationship with several pueblos.

CASAA investigators are supported by research grants from the National Institutes of Health, other Federal Agencies, Private Foundations, the State of New Mexico, and the University of New Mexico.

CASAA's Director is J. Scott Tonigan, Ph.D. UNM faculty members conduct research at CASAA on a full- or part-time basis. CASAA provides extensive research training opportunities for pre- and post-doctoral fellows as well as undergraduate students. CASAA supports close to 100 full- and part-time staff and students in training.

This collaborative venture combines two approaches to achieve amazing results! By 2040, we will reduce alcohol, opioid, and other substance mortality by 50%, substance-related consequences (including overdose, injury, and accidents) by 50%, crime, incarceration, and recidivism by 30%, adverse childhood experiences by 30%, and overall economic costs of substance related morbidity and mortality by 30%.

The person in this position will have expertise in primary prevention and intervention of substance use and SUD, improving treatment outcomes for individuals with SUD, quantitative or qualitative methods to address etiology, prevention and treatment of SUD, the intersection of policy and communities, and/or implementation to address the continuum of substance use, SUD, and substance-related harms.

This position will help build collaborative, interdisciplinary networks with researchers and stakeholders both at UNM and throughout the state working on issues related to SUD. The central goals of this Grand Challenge are to work with others across UNM and New Mexico to reduce alcohol, opioid, and other substance mortality and substance-related consequences (including overdose, injury, accidents, crime, incarceration, recidivism, adverse childhood experiences). There are opportunities for collaboration with many programs, centers, and institutes across UNM. CASAA is specifically looking for a candidate with demonstrated research expertise in the areas of alcohol and polysubstance use, epidemiology, policy-related work, and/or work examining rural/urban, economic, and racial/ethnic disparities in alcohol and polysubstance use.
