Job Description

Facilities Management, Residential Facilities, seeks a Painter to apply protective and decorative coatings of paint, varnish, lacquer and other materials to interior and exterior surfaces of building, furniture, equipment and structures.

Salary Range

$22.12 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Essential Duties

  • Apply protective and decorative coats of paint, varnish, lacquer and/or other related materials to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, equipment and other structures.
  • Wash, scrape, sand, torch and/or smooth interior and exterior surfaces prior to painting, varnishing, lacquering or applying other related materials.
  • Clean equipment, paint mixing area and work area.
  • Operate compressors, striping machines, sandblasters, spray equipment and other small power equipment.
  • Install, repair and maintain drywall, wall texturing, and ceiling acoustic texturing.
  • Operate heavy lift equipment including scissors, boom swing stage to heights of 80 feet.
  • Erect various types of scaffolding, staging, ladders and planks to reach surfaces of work area for painters and others.
  • Apply paints, stains, surface preparatory materials and undercoating materials to a variety of surfaces, as appropriate according to materials safety data sheets within established hazardous materials guidelines.
  • Determine appropriate color for new or replacement applications through consultation with customer.
  • Maintain existing paint surfaces through matching and tinting of appropriate paint products.
  • Identification, safe handling, and appropriate disposal of paints, stains, and preparatory and undercoating materials and other hazardous materials. 

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday-Tuesday / Thursday– Friday (four days per week) 7:00AM– 5:30PM


Minimum Qualifications

Six years of painting experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in commercial settings
  • Experience and knowledge of paint trade, tools and/or equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety requirements and/or techniques
  • Experience in customer Service


Working Environment

  • Wash, scrape and sand interior and exterior surfaces prior to painting, varnishing, lacquering or applying materials.
  • Utilize hand tools (e.g. scrapers, hand masker, screw drivers, cordless drill, sander, paint mixer), power tools( e.g. compressors, striping machines, sandblasters, airless sprayers), and equipment.
  • Utilize personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator).
  • Erect, climb, and work off scaffolding, staging, ladders, and planks to reach surfaces to paint and apply surface coatings.
  • Work in extreme temperatures, confined areas, air contamination, and hazardous materials.
  • Lift and carry up to 55 lbs. 
  • Drive University vehicles. 
  • Push and/or pull approximately 200-300 pound weight loaded on wheeled maintenance carts to transport tools and equipment throughout campus to job site.

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire. 

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than general operating funds. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.
