What Success Looks Like In This Job

Assists attorneys in the preparation and prosecution of felony and misdemeanor cases. Under the attorney's direction, researches law, organizes witnesses, investigates facts, and prepares documents to ease the caseload responsibilities of the attorneys and expedite the legal process.

Examples of Duties for Success

Works with attorneys, investigators and staff in preparing felony and misdemeanor cases; orders reports, medical records and other documents necessary for trial preparation; prepares trial notebooks; participates in witness interviews when necessary.

Prepares legal documents such as affidavits, witness lists, motions, orders, amended charging documents and petitions for reimbursement for review, approval, and use by attorney; when appropriate, files documents with court; composes general correspondence.

Reports witness updates to attorneys; contacts witnesses to confirm appearances; coordinates witnesses' testimony date and time with attorney and follows up with witnesses; makes travel and lodging arrangements when necessary.

Works in conjunction with Victim Advocates regarding testimony and trial preparation for victim and other witnesses to the case.

Attends and assists with presentation of preliminary hearings and trials. Provides input to attorneys regarding witness status or trial action; may testify in court.

Researches and drafts routine pleadings, briefs, and legal memorandums.

Maintains retrieval system of in-house legal research and opinions.

Performs complex audio and video media redaction in usable format for trial and other hearings.

Loads exhibits into trial presentation software. Creates PowerPoint presentations for hearings and trials. Identifies and gathers necessary media equipment for trial.

Respond to telephone and walk-in inquiries from attorneys, law enforcement officials, witnesses and the general public.

Provide assistance to legal assistants in other support units as needed.

Qualifications for Success

Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible legal support experience.

Education: Paralegal Certificate from a college or technical school; preferably containing classes and coursework in criminal law. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Ability to work outside of the standard office environment.

Ability to work in a highly active environment.

Ability to lift approximately 11 - 25 lbs., i.e. catalog briefcases.
