POSITION PURPOSE:
Under the general direction of their supervisor, the Commercial Billing Specialist verifies all the information necessary to properly submit clean claims to Medicaid, Veterans Administration, and Commercial Insurance. Reviews all insurance accounts on a consistent basis and will telephone customer support to expedite processing for promptness of payment. Responsible for maintaining up-to-date Medicaid, VA, and Commercial Insurance policies and billing procedures, and maintaining Commercial Insurance current contracts. The CommercialBilling Specialist will monitor the Charge Master updates and report any problems to the Patient Financial Services Manager. The Commercia lBilling Specialist must be able to communicate effectively and pleasantly both over the phone and in person.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
The Commercial Billing Specialist position requires the incumbent possess the minimum of a high school diploma and two to three years of experience in computerized hospital patient accounts is preferred. This individual should be able to operate such general office machines as a computer, adding machine by touch, photocopier, FAX and multi-line switchboard phone system. This position must present a professional appearance, deal courteously and respectfully with patients, be able to learn and follow established departmental policies, be able to perform work with attention to detail, be able to maintain accurate records and be able to contribute to a pleasant, positive working environment.

ENVIRONMENT:
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28 bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The Patient Financial Services Department provides reception, registration, billing, collections and receipting functions for the hospital and Long Term Care. The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well maintained. The position requires a moderate amount of mobility. The ability to reason, speak and have basic manual dexterity is essential. Physical demands are moderate and may include sitting, standing for prolonged periods, walking, stooping and occasional lifting. Psychological demands can be very strenuous. Most work is performed inside and the work is generally of a positive nature.
