Position Summary

The University of New Mexico, Office of the University Controller, also known as Financial Services (FS), located on Main Campus is responsible for all central accounting functions for the University.

It is the responsibility of the Controller's Office to ensure compliance with all financial policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the University or imposed by external agencies, including state and federal audit requirements, following generally accepted accounting practices. Additionally, the Organization oversees the maintenance of the official financial records of the University.

Within Financial Services is The Payroll Department! Payroll is the sole department for processing payroll, distributing salary and wage payments to UNM faculty, staff, and student employees. The department is seeking a dedicated individual for Manager of Accounting!

We're looking for a dedicated individual with exceptional work ethic and strong leadership qualities to join our team. The ability to lead and motivate teams is essential along with overseeing all aspects of the Payroll Department and providing strategic guidance with exceptional customer service to the University community is a must.

We're seeking a professional candidate who will manage the day-to-day activities of the department including ensuring compliance with university, state, and federal policies and regulations on all payroll related actions. Supervise and manage personnel including work allocation, training, professional development, enforcement of internal processes and controls, and initiating and finalizing staff performance evaluations. This individual's participation is crucial to monitoring external and internal audits, assisting in the development, implementation and maintenance of policies and processes involving payroll activities, and advising, consulting and meeting as necessary with FS leadership, UNM departments and other UNM Core Offices regarding compliance, internal controls, audit requests, special projects and processes.

This position is on-site, Monday - Friday 8am to 5pm (during trial or probationary period).

Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's education, experience, and qualifications.

This position is a Term appointment with and end date of December 31, 2025. Continuance beyond this date will be contingent upon available funding.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferences should be supported in the resume.

  • Experience with complex payroll processes
  • Experience with managing a team
  • Experience with Federal and State regulations applicable to various payroll reporting requirements
  • Experience problem solving and decision making
  • Experience with researching and analyzing complex payroll issues and making recommendations to leadership.
