Job Description

Financial Services seeks a Payroll Specialist Sr. in the Payroll area. This position performs a broad scope ofprofessional payroll accounting activities requiring strong decision making skills and ability to workindependently.


Salary Range

$19.30 per hour

Essential Duties

  • Audit and reconcile a wide range of personnel actions and payroll documents for university employees.
  • Review and process employee data (pay corrections, additional pay, time adjustments) including entering information into PeopleSoft HRIS.
  • Assist in processing the biweekly payroll by reviewing audit reports and making timely corrections in PeopleSoft HRIS.
  • Provide customer service to university employees in the area of pay and taxes as they relate to their pay, how to enter time or time off, where to locate forms and information.
  • Instruct university departments on how to process payroll transactions.
  • Scan and file payroll documents.
  • Review payroll overpayments and calculate repayment amounts.
  • Prepare various reports utilizing Excel.


Minimum Qualifications

Four years of payroll processing experience, which includes three years of clerical accounting/tax experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal payroll and related tax regulations
  • Experience in payroll in higher education institution
  • Experience in building complex spreadsheets
  • Experience in using PeopleSoft HRIS Payroll module
  • Experience in a high-volume, customer service environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of payroll principles, practices, regulations and procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting policies and procedures
  • Evidence of effective communication skill


Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
