STARTING SALARY: $ 12.85 /hr.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Peer Mentors strive to help people reach their personal goals and live healthy lives by supporting them in identifying strengths and abilities followed by assisting them in articulating, developing, and creating personal goals for recovery through one on one and group sessions. Peer Mentors support the therapeutic milieu and assist consumers in accessing therapeutic and ancillary services. Peer Mentors are expected to follow the principals of Intentional Peer Support in an effort to facilitate autonomy, choice and mutuality in the peer relationship.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Gain knowledge by learning skills and growing ability to better assist people we serve to move toward recovery & wellbeing.
  • Orient persons to program and available services.
  • Report clinical concerns and high-risk persons and safety issues as they occur to other program staff and supervisor at staff report times. Follow clinical direction.
  • Work with program staff to develop and maintain resource directory available to persons.
  • Assist persons in obtaining services that suit the individuals recovery needs including community and natural supports in addition to organizational supports.
  • Assist in arranging and providing transportation for appointments and services.
  • Promote collaboration and sharing of resources for persons in community: food, clothing, transportation, recreation, medical, insurances, housing, shelters, and employment, as appropriate.
  • Use ongoing individual and group sessions that build on identifying strengths and teach people problem-solving techniques, how to identify and overcome fears and combat negative self-talk/self-stigma.
  • Attend program team meetings and supervision as scheduled.
  • Attend trainings as scheduled.
  • Maintain a trauma informed environment of wellbeing.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Lived experience: Currently working toward ones own recovery with mental health issues and participating in Mental Health Center of Denver programs.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Knowledge or ability to learn and practice trauma informed principles and practices
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to operate a computer
  • Good time management skills
  • Consistent and reliable attendance
  • Adept with Intentional Peer Support model

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED: Computers, calculators, fax machines, copiers, telephone and a variety of other office/clerical equipment.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, the telephone and other office and/or clinical equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: May require occasional evening or weekend hours.
