UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring for a Family Community Medicine Staff Physician to join our School of Medicine team at UNM. This opportunity is a part-time 0.4FTE day shift opening located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Summary

Under indirect supervision, provides and manages direct health care for a specified patient population.

The Transdisciplinary Evaluation and Support Clinic (TEASC) provides consultative, interdisciplinary clinical services for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), and is seeking a part-time staff physician, board certified in neurology, with interest in and a background working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

The position will participate in consultative clinical services as part of the TEASC interdisciplinary team for individuals with I/DD, who may have complex medical and/or behavioral challenges. Services include TEASC evaluations provided statewide, an Adult Special Needs Clinic (in collaboration with multiple other UNM clinicians) and technical assistance provided upon request. The applicant may also participate in collaborative multidisciplinary clinics based on need and interests, which may include the Adult Cerebral Palsy Clinic, the Adult Feeding Clinic Supports and Assessment for Feeding and Eating (SAFE) Clinic, Developmental Disabilities/Mental Illness (DDMI) Clinics, or Botox Clinic.

Because multiple learners participate in TEASC clinical services, incidental to clinical duties, the position may also provide mentoring for a broad spectrum of students, including medical, dental, OT, PT, and SLP, demonstrating best practices for serving patients/clients with IDD.

Minimum Job Requirements of a Physician:

Medical doctor with 3 to 5 years of directly related experience which may include residency in a directly related medical specialty. State of New Mexico and Federal DEA Certification; Medical Specialty License or Certification; Board Certified or Board Eligible in specified area of medical specialty. Verification of education and licensure (if applicable) will be required if selected for hire.

Preferences

  • Substantial (minimum 5 years) experience serving patients/clients with I/DD.
  • Substantial (minimum 5 years) experience working within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring students, residents, and/or fellows within the context of provision of clinical care.

Duties and Responsibilities of a Physician:

  • Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
  • Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.
  • Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage.
  • Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

The position will also participate in and may direct research projects of the TEASC team. The successful candidate must have a background in developing and conducting research with vulnerable populations, and demonstrated creativity, insight, and leadership in conducting research.

Additionally, the position may participate in a TEASC project to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum for a broad spectrum of students, including medical, dental, OT, PT, SLP, and architecture students, incorporating best practices for serving patients/clients with IDD.

As part of the research and curriculum development projects, the position will participate in and may direct production of publishable materials and presentations at national/international meetings.

Finally, the position will participate in mentoring of students, residents, and fellows who participate in TEASC clinics, collaborative clinics and other activities.
