Overall Job Objective

Summary

Under general supervision of the Water/Wastewater Plant Manager, the Plant Electrician is responsible for performing skilled level electrical work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade. This position may be assigned to shop or field installation tasks. This position may require to be on-call after hours, holidays, and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school Diploma or GED equivalent and completion of a recognized four year electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent training; or three years of experience as a skilled controls electrician; Or any other combination of experience, training and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted. Knowledge of NFPA70E is required. Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements. Must successfully complete a background check

Examples of Duties

  • Installs, alters, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring systems and equipment, both high and low voltage (i.e., wall electrical outlets, air distribution systems, pumps, transformers, motors, and appliances);
  • Maintains and repairs equipment used in 24-hour operations;
  • Installs control systems and devices;
  • Installs and maintains motors of several hundred horsepower, coils, transformers, and control equipment of up to 480 volts;
  • Documents information on preventive maintenance file petaining to electrical equipment and machinery and monitors a preventive maintenance program;
  • Installs and maintains water pumps and booster stations consisting of various horsepower, from functional to several horsepower;
  • Installs and maintains transformers, substations, and related control equipment (motors, generators, pumps, blowers, air compressors, etc.);
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs series and multiple lighting systems at wastewater and water treatment facilities;
  • Draws circuits on a one line diagram for controls;
  • Designs functional electric circuitry for electrical systems;
  • Operates earth moving equipment, aerial equipment, and pneumatic equipment in the installation and repair of electrical equipment;
  • Provides on-the-job training for staff members in skills of the electrical trade;
  • Responds to customer inquiries or complaints;
  • Acts as a "on-call" electrician for responding to emergency calls after normal working hours;
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Other Requirements

  • Knowledge of Electrical construction and maintenance, including installation of all sizes of electrical conduit, cables, wires, switches, automatic starting equipment, and pole line construction.
  • Knowledge of Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current NFPA codes and the National Electric Code.
  • Knowledge of NFPA70E is required
  • Must have skill in the care and use of hand tools and equipment necessary to perform various electrical repair tasks such as hickeys, volt meters, wiggins, meggars, and VOM's.
  • Skill in locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of earth moving equipment, aerial equipment, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish between the full range of colors in the color spectrum to work with electrical wires.
  • Ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs for a long distance of more than 20 feet.
  • Ability to make precise arm-hand positioning movements (i.e., operates an electric hand drill); to physically lift arms above shoulder level to work in ceiling areas, on light fixtures; must be able to work in small, cramped areas such as ceiling crawl spaces, equipment enclosures, closets.
  • Ability to work at heights greater than ten feet.
  • Ability in making mathematical computations.
  • Ability to exercise independent thought and action within the scope of specific assignments.
  • Ability to comprehend and make inferences from written materials.
  • Ability to measure distances with a tape measure or other measuring device.
  • Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach work areas.
  • Must have the ability to remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able express ideas on technical problems clearly and concisely orally and in writing in the English language.
  • Must work cooperatively with other employees, building occupants, and the Community.
  • Ability to observe, monitor, or compare data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
  • Ability to make decisions and coordinate work based on information given by the customer.
  • Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
