Job Description

Grand Canyon Universitys Police Department is seeking full time Police Officers to ensure the safety and security of the GCU campus. The GCU Police Department performs general and specialized police work involving the enforcement of laws and ordinances, crime prevention, and other community services.

Responsibilities:

  • Patrols assigned areas of Grand Canyon University owned properties, by automobile, foot or bicycle, for the prevention of crime and enforcement of all applicable criminal, traffic, and liquor laws and City Ordinances.
  • Responds to calls for service involving crimes such as thefts, robberies, assaults, homicides, and narcotics violations.
  • Presents public relations programs to campus groups; presents other programs and participates in community functions.
  • Responds to all calls for service including those that do not involve crimes, but are civil or societal issues requested police presence.
  • Provides police services at various special events on Grand Canyon University owned properties.
  • Secures the scene of a crime; makes arrests; books suspects. Prepares reports to accurately document information.
  • Responds to hazardous materials incidents and traffic accidents; investigates traffic accidents; detects impaired drivers; administers first aid; directs traffic and requests medical assistance.
  • Participates in problem oriented policing efforts by identifying problem areas, recommending and implementing solutions, and monitoring the results.
  • Writes and executes search warrants.
  • Serves court orders (e.g., subpoenas), arrest warrants, and mental health orders.
  • Operates standard weapons (handgun, etc.) to enforce law, detain a subject, or protect the life of self or others in situations that justify the use of force or deadly force.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years as a Police Officer.
  • Must have Arizona Post Certification, either active or inactive. Must continuously meet all requirements and standards of AZ POST.
  • Must have valid Arizona Drivers License and be insurable.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain ACJIS Terminal Operators Certification.
  • Must successfully pass a physical exam, polygraph test, psychological assessment, physical agility test, background investigation, and drug test.
  • Ability to work four 10-hour shifts per week; overtime, holiday, weekend and shift work (days, swings or grave yard shifts).
  • Demonstrates a high degree of ethical behavior and adheres to the standards and regulations of the University and governing federal and state statutes.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confrontational situations and situations requiring negotiation.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Remain calm, composed, undistracted, and in full control of cognitive abilities while functioning appropriately in hostile, dangerous, or frightening situations that may require use of deadly force.
  • Maintain rational decision making and self-control in situations which involve considerable stress, danger, personal risk, violence, hostility or the use of force.
  • Physical strength demands the ability to drag or carry human bodies in emergency situations, sit in a vehicle or stand for long periods of time, walk up and down at least 4 flights of stairs without pause.
  • Occasional risk includes physical hazards from violent, aggressive and hostile people, a variety of weapons, bodily fluids, sharp objects, traffic, drugs and drug paraphernalia and civil litigation due to performance of duties also creating high stress situations.
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the Universitys Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.
